Mother detained for questioning after ‘accident’

A 27-year-old woman is assisting the Homicide Bureau in connection with the death of a close male relative, who was initially believed to be the victim in an accident.

According to police reports, last Friday, Kieron Archibald was driving along the extension of the Point Fortin Highway near the Berridge Trace overpass in South Oropouche. The car veered off the highway and crashed into an iron railing. At the time, there were four other occupants in the car including the woman and three children.

Archibald died and no one else sustained any major injuries.

Snr Supt Adams and Supt Phillip, of the South-Western Division, spearheaded investigations with Sgt Gookool and other officers. Police initially believed that Archibald’s death was because of the injuries sustained in the accident. Thus, the body was taken to the mortuary of the San Fernando General Hospital for a post-mortem. But on Saturday while the post-mortem was in progress, the doctor cancelled it because he found a stab wound on the body.

On Monday, an autopsy performed at the Forensic Sciences Centre, St James, stated that the cause of death was due to injuries consistent with a stab wound to his leg.

Under the supervision of Insp Corrie of Homicide Bureau (Region III), police subsequently arrested the 27-year-old mother. Investigators later learned that she was also a victim of domestic violence.

Police were yesterday expected to go to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for instructions on the matter.

Investigations are continuing.
