Daily News Ltd has announced the appointment of Judy Raymond as its new Editor in Chief. She replaces Jones P Madeira, who assumes the position of Executive Editorial Consultant to the board of directors.

The Newsday board sees Raymond’s appointment as a very positive development as the company continues its quest to enhance its share in the local media market, which has been undergoing transformation over several years with the advent of the digital age.

Newsday has been placing emphasis on deepening its presence online and part of Raymond’s remit will be to assist in the culture change among Newsday editorial personnel to operate in the new environment. She also comes as no stranger to Newsday, since she has been consulting with the company for the past year, training staff and developing systems to bring about improvement in their work-flow and in the improvement of Newsday’s products both print and on-line.

Raymond has been a journalist for many years and is a former editor in chief of the Trinidad Guardian and assistant editor of the Sunday Express. She has also edited Caribbean Airlines’ in-flight magazine Caribbean Beat. Raymond has also edited numerous books.

She has also published three books, the most recent being The Colour of Shadows (2016), a study of images of Caribbean slavery and of the conditions of slavery in the years leading up to Emancipation. She has recently finished a short biography of Beryl McBurnie, founder of the Little Carib Theatre, commissioned by the UWI Press and due for publication next year.

Raymond has degrees from the University of Oxford and the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University.
