$13M for Sando waterfront project

Three projects in the San Fernando Waterfront Redevelopment Project have been allocated the sum of $13 million in this fiscal year’s budget to get works started according to Minister of Planning and Development Camille Robinson-Regis.

Under the line ministries/government agencies subhead of the Ministry of Planning and Development head in the 2017 development programme expenditure for fiscal 2018, Robinson-Regis told yesterday’s meeting of the Standing Finance Committee of the Parliament that several agencies, including the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) and the Ministry of Housing, are involved in the waterfront project with her ministry having overarching responsibility.

The sum of $5 million has been allocated for the relocation of squatters.

“Sites are to be identified for the temporary relocation of squatters, after which the funds will be used for site planning, physical infrastructure development and the construction of homes,” she said.

“Sites (for housing) have not yet been identified. They are still being negotiated with the Land Settlement Agency.”

The relocation of the PTSC terminal in San Fernando has been allocated the sum of $5 million. That phase of the project is being executed by the Urban Development Company of Trinidad and Tobago.

Asked by Pointe a Pierre MP David Lee about the allocation of $3 million for the upgrade of Plaza San Carlos, Robinson-Regis said, the project falls within the San Fernando Waterfront Redevelopment Project. “We are redeveloping the whole waterfront.”
