Chairman of selectors : Red Force can win Super50 Cup

Newly appointed national cricket selectors’ chairman Rajendra Mangalie is confident the TT Red Force can win the Cricket West Indies (CWI) CG United Super50 Cup title, when the tournament bowls off in Trinidad in November.

The former Trinidad and Tobago opening batsman Mangalie said he is pleased with what he has seen so far in the opening round of the ongoing four-team tournament, which is being used as trials to select the national team.

Mangalie is joined on the TTCricket Board’s national selection committee by coast guardsman Frank Simmons, former national batsman David Mohammed, Ricardo Paty, who played for Queen’s Park, and head coach Rayad Emrit.

“We have a very proud record in the Super50 Cup and I am very optimistic as the tournament will be held in Trinidad. It is very important we get everything right in terms of assembling a balanced team,” said Mangalie via a TTCB statement.

The Red Force are defending Super50 champions having won in 2023 as no winners were crowned last year when Barbados Pride and Jamaica Scorpions both forfeited the final in a controversial finish to the tournament.

Both captains were not present for a delayed toss, effectively refusing to play and as a result, CWI declared that no champions would be declared.

Already, in the first round of the four-team trial matches last week, the fast bowlers and batsmen put their hands up with Abdul-Raheem Toppin (5/34), Shaaron Lewis (3/22) giving Soca Strikers a close 19-run win over Cocrico Warriors.

This was after Jacen Agard (3/15) and Ricky Jaipaul (2/16) restricted Soca Strikers to 133, with only Andrew Rambaran showing his class with 63 in a low-scoring affair at the National Cricket Centre ground in Balmain.

Meanwhile, at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, veteran all- rounder Tion Webster led from the front as Steelpan Titans edged Scarlet Blazers by one run in a high-scoring contest that went down to the final over.

Titans skipper Webster struck 73 off 93 balls with eight fours and two sixes, while fellow opener Kamil Pooran made 67 off 76 balls to set a solid platform.

Then Jyd Goolie’s run-a-ball 71 not out and Jesse Bootan’s aggressive 65 off 36 guided Titans to an imposing 316 for six off 50 overs.

The Blazers replied with 315 in 49.1 overs. Evin Lewis hit nine sixes and four fours in his 92 off 73 balls, while Joshua Davis scored a composed 62 off 76 balls.

Late-order efforts from Aadian Racha (31) and Justin Manick (20) kept them in the hunt, but Webster (2/44) held his nerve in the final over, removing Jerve Cummings (15) with the first ball to seal a thrilling win.

Speaking on the ongoing trial tourney for Super50 Cup team selection, Mangalie said, “I thought the performances reflected the desire of the batters and bowlers to make an impression on the selectors and showed that they are carrying on where they left off after the TTCB Premier League season.”

“The players making themselves available for national duty is an exciting mix of youth and experience in all departments of the game and with home advantage, we will be expected to extend our dominance in the limited overs format of the game.”

Managalie expects a challenging job to come up with a squad, considering the abundance of talent available, to provide TT the best chance of lifting the crown once more.

South East defeat South in TTCB U-13 tourney

SOUTH EAST claimed a 24-run win in a keenly contested clash with South when action in the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board Under-13 Interzone tournament continued at PowerGen Sports Club in Penal on May 5.

Inserted to have first strike, South East made a competitive score of 182 for seven in a game which was reduced to a 40-over affair. After losing opening batsman Jayden Aaron for a duck in the third over, South East got a number of handy innings as captain Ronaldo Siewsankar (32 off 31 balls), Saveer Deonarine (28 not out off 37), Kaydon Boochoon (24) and Jonathan Mungaroo (23 off 11) all contributed nicely.

Opening bowler Vashist Jagdeo was the pick of the bowlers for South as he grabbed three for 39, accounting for the wickets of Aaron, Jaden Guevarro (12) and Ronaldo Basdeo (one). Meanwhile, Dylan Rambharose and Bradley Jaimungal grabbed two wickets apiece.

After getting a decent start, South slipped from 48 for one to 75 for five in a seven-over span, with Mungaroo (two for 19) grabbing the scalps of Josiah Ramlal (duck) and opening batsman Kavir Kolahal in the 21st over.

A sixth-wicket stand of 57 between Jagdeo (31 off 46) and Shafeel Stewart (16 off 24) brought South right back into contention, before the pair’s partnership was halted when Raashid Mohammed effected the run out of Stewart in the 30th over. South were on 132 for six at that stage, leaving them needing 51 runs off the last ten overs.

South left themselves too much to do at the death, though, as their last four wickets fell for 26 runs. Jagdeo was the last man to be dismissed when he was run out in the 38th over as South were bowled out for 158.

Kayden Waterman led the South East attack with figures of three for 15, which included the scalps of captain Sanjeev Samaroo (ten), Adam Ghuran (12) and Xavier Stewart (one).

Marchin Patriots grab full points vs Powergen on National League Day 1

BESS Motors Marchin Patriots were awarded full points against Powergen Sports Club citing an administrative error on day one of the TTCB National League Premiership One, round six match at Syne Village Grounds, Penal.

Powergen`s overseas player Guyanese wicket-keeper batter Anthony Bramble was mistakenly left out of the team sheet at the toss. Unknowingly, he entered the match to bat facing four balls before the protest was lodged by the fielding team.

Powergen won the toss and were batting 110/4 when the match was abandoned. Ewart Nicholson made 62 runs while Videsh Sookhai added 38 runs.

In another match, home team Victoria batted first against Yorkshire Club, and they totalled 203 all out from 55.1 overs in their first innings. Captain and opener Marcelle Jones top scored with 71 runs and Damien Singh added 29 runs. Quincy Babel was the main destroyer with the ball for Yorkshire taking 4/42 whilst Ziggy Levi 3/58 and Adrian Mohammed 2/28 also claimed crucial scalps.

In reply, Yorkshire claimed first innings points as they ended the day`s play on 223/6. Top-order batter Akeel Mohammed slammed an even 100 runs and Aadian Racha added 57 runs sharing a 109-run partnership that restored their innings. Victorian was the chief destroyer Damion Joachim (3/61), whilst Duane Charles and Jovan Ali captured a wicket apiece.

At the Inshan Ali Grounds, host Preysal Sports Club batters Camillo Carimbocas (111) and Sachin Seecharan (108) blasted centuries to set up a mammoth total of 380 all out in 78.1 overs against Merryboys Sports Club. 19-year-old, off-spinner Saurav Worrell was the pick of the bowlers for Merryboys capturing his maiden five-wicket haul (5/109) and skipper Andrew Rambaran had 2/57. Merryboys were 40/1 at the end of play.

Central Sports clinched first innings points against Clarke Road United when play ended on day one. Batting first, Clarke Road was bundled out for a modest 155 with tail-ender Ahkeel Mollon top-scoring with 38 runs. Leading wicket-takers for Central Sports were Ameer Ali (4-35), Mikel Govia (3-49) and Derone Davis (2/43). At their turn at the crease, national player Kjorn Ottley blasted 88 runs (5 boundaries, two maximums) to help his team to 191/7 at the close of the play.

Prisons Sports Club scored a huge total of 366 all out against Queen`s Park Cricket Club. Rickson Maniram (61), Jerve Cummings (53) and Kareem Hamilton (51) were the main scorers. At the end of day one, QPCC were 11/0 in their reply.

Yorkshire’s Akeem Mohammed smashes 76 against Central Sports

CENTRAL Sports trail Yorkshire’s first innings score by 29 runs with six wickets in hand at stumps after day one of a rain-affected National League Premiership I round six at Cunjal Recreation Ground.

Batting first, the south-based Yorkshire posted 160 runs all out, with Akeem Mohammed topping all scorers with 76. Mikel Govia showed good form with the ball for Central Sports as he picked up 4/45 while Ameer Ali (2/20), Marlon Richards (2/26) and Derone Davis (2/35) all snared two wickets apiece.

In response, Central Sports struggled to get going and closed off day one play on 131/6, with Kjorn Ottley (36) their best scorer so far. Jeremiah Cruickshank scored 21 and Govia remains unbeaten at the crease on 20.

Bowling for Yorkshire were Kallis Ali (3/34) and Chris Pattia (2/36).

In other matches, Prisons Sports were dismissed for 176 runs while Clarke Road concluded the day’s proceedings on 72/4. Siddel Diaz was Prisons’ top scorer with 86.

Due to rain delays, Powergen got to 89/5 versus Victoria at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva.

Scyon Charles five-for leads South East to TTCB U17 title

South East claimed the TT Cricket Board’s (TTCB) Under-17 Interzone crown on April 4 when they got a 69-run win against Central in a low-scoring final at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain, Couva.

Sent in to bat first, South East made a modest score of 176 for nine from 43 overs with middle-order batsman Zane Maraj top-scoring with 51 off 79 balls and skipper Brendan Boodoo making 36 off 46. Ra’ed Ali Khan (two for 25) and Kyle Ramesar (two for 41) led Central’s bowling attack.

In their turn at the crease, Central had an almighty struggle as they were bowled out for 107 in 26.4 overs. Sanjay Naidoo was the lone Central batsman to stand up to the South East bowling as he made 33 off 44.

Pacer Scyon Charles ripped through Central’s batting with figures of five for 27 and claimed the first five scalps as he got openers Darrius Batoosingh (two) and skipper Saleem Khan (15), along with Aadi Ramsaran (one), Christiano Ramanan and Sameer Khan (both zero). Ganesh Gobin, who grabbed a five-wicket haul in the semifinals on April 2, also aided in Central’s demise as he took three for 14.

Boodoo capped off a good allround game with figures of two for 26 as his team got the facile victory.

Nicholas Sookdesingh slams century as Clarke Road hunt first win

IN search of their first outright win of the National League premier one season, Clarke Road’s Nicholas Sookdeosingh (136 not out) slammed an unbeaten century on day one of their round two tie against Bess Motors Marchin Patriots at Marchin Grounds in Charlieville, on February 8.

Sookdeosingh’s impressive performance with the bat carried the Penal team to 258, before the hosts concluded the day’s play on 65/2.

Batting first, Sookdeosingh led the charge for Clarke Road while Andy Mahase (31) was the only other real contributor with the bat. Patriots spinner Kashtri Singh (5/60) did most of the damage with the ball with Ricky Japiaul (3/89) also showing clear intent.

In reply, Patriots lost two early wickets courtesy of Clarke Road’s Ronaldo Forester, and resume the second day’s play on 65/2, on February 9, with opener Even Lewis (35 not out) championing the chase.

Clarke Road’s first match against Victoria Sports was drawn.

At Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair, Akeil Cooper (99 not out) and Videos Sookhai (66) played the most instrumental roles in leading Powergen Penal Sports to 272, against hosts Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC).

Nicholas Ali chipped in with 38 but Parkites’ bowlers Isaiah Rajah (3/54), Dexter Sween (3/64) and Sunil Narine (2/54) showed good form with the ball.

In their turn at the crease, the Parkites looked steady as openers Jordan Warner (48 not out) and Kyle Ramdoo (13 not out) led the response, finishing day one 68 without loss with one day to go.

In other matches, at Invaders Ground in Felicity, Marcelle Jones slammed 69 for Victoria Sports to post 188 in their first innings, but defending champions Central Sports hit back with 221, courtesy Kamil Pooran (45) and Imran Khan (44).

Rambaran cops top award at TTCB academy

TRINIDAD and Tobago’s most promising cricketers were told that their selection to participate in the TT Cricket Board’s academy programme is testament to their development as moral, ethical and responsible young men.

This was stated by Professor Dr Fayad Ali, a prolific author, mathematics tutor, and former Dean of Academic Studies at Naparima College, San Fernando, during his feature address on Saturday at the group’s graduation ceremony.

The event was held at the National Cricket Centre at Balmain, Couva, and in attendance were president of the TTCB Azim Bassarath, and vice-president of Cricket West Indies; Justin Latapy-George, and Linda Sanchez, both representing sponsors, the Sport Company of TT; parents and academy coaches.

He said the training prepared the youngsters, all under 20 years old, to boldly carve their own paths.

“For this, you must redefine success by becoming more accountable and becoming more answerable to yourself,” Ali said, telling the graduates each can make a difference in the cricket world.

“At every junction choose the route that beckons you, and if none does, then carve a new road, but do not stop, do not hesitate, for the world does not stop spinning for you,” Ali said.

He told the potential stars to compete with themselves and never yearn to be like someone else. He urged them to look in the mirror every morning and work to perform better than the day before.

Ali warned that for success in any field, there is a price to pay and being a top sportsman is unlike a lawyer, salesman or chauffeur.

“You have less than two decades to etch your name across the sky. Second chances are rare, lost opportunities are seldom regained, and forgiveness comes with a heavy penalty.”

He said in sports, there is little room for sympathy “as the same people who idolise you will turn their backs and bury you the next day without ceremony and a headstone.”

In his overview of the programme, head coach Debideen Manick commended his coaching staff including Gibran Mohammed and trainer Gerald Garcia.

He said the 20-member group of cricketers were exemplary in their behaviour and discipline, and who were very receptive to what was being taught.

Also the youngsters had the benefit of the interacting with Iman Khan and Denesh Ramdin, both former national captains, as well ex-West Indies manager Omar Khan.

At the end of the programme which spanned eight weekends, Andrew Rambaran was adjudged most outstanding.

However, Rambaran was not present to collect his award as he was in Antigua attending a CWI training camp.

Awards were also presented to Nick Ramlal – most improved; Ronillster Perreira – best allrounder; Zachary Siewah – most disciplined; Aadian Racha – most promising; and Orlando James for leadership.

Bassarath thanked the Sport Company for their generous contribution which allowed the youngsters to participate in the academy after the programme was interrupted by the covid19 restrictions.

He said parents should also be acknowledged for allowing the boys to be part of the programme, as well as former Red Force captain Kieron Pollard.
