Woman seeks closure 7 years after mother's murder

ALMOST seven years after the brutal slaying of her mother, a woman says she intends to offer her mother’s name in prayers for the dead at church, as she continues to seek closure in a case that remains unsolved.

Carolyn McKenzie, the daughter of Angela Elizabeth McKenzie, 64, who was chopped to death at her home in Siparia, said the anniversary of the murder remains painful for her family.

“I do not like to relive this, but this year is seven years since the murder, and the family has no closure. There are too many unsolved crimes in this country. I want closure for my mother. I want to get to the bottom of this,” Carolyn said.

Her mother was murdered on January 30, 2019, at her home in a forested area off Quinam Road, Siparia.

McKenzie’s body was found in the front yard with multiple chop wounds, injuries so severe that they had almost severed her neck.

Investigators also found a trail of blood inside the house, leading police and relatives to believe the attack began indoors before moving outside. According to her daughter, “from the look of things, nothing was taken from the house.”

As the death anniversary approaches, Carolyn told Newsday that by the gesture of offering her mother’s name, she hopes it will bring some comfort, even as questions surrounding the murder remain unanswered.

McKenzie, the mother of five, lived alone and was an active farmer and a devoted member of the La Divina Pastora RC Church in Siparia.

Carolyn added that sometime ago, she just started bawling her eyes out thinking about her mother.

Police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three said the case is ongoing.

Marabella man, 33, gunned down

A 33-year-old man was shot and killed just days before Christmas in Marabella, leaving his relatives and friends in mourning.

The victim has been identified as Kreston Phillips, who was unemployed and had addresses at Battoo Boulevard and Union Road, both in Marabella.

According to police, the shooting occurred around 8 am on December 22 along Manohar Street.

Gunshots were heard, and the police were alerted.

Officers from the Southern Division Task Force were the first responders and found Phillips lying on his back along the road with gunshot wounds. Several spent shells were also discovered nearby.

Phillips was still alive when officers arrived but was barely breathing.

Police tried to speak with him, but he appeared to be unconscious.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, were notified and have taken over the probe.

No arrests have been made so far, and investigations are continuing.

Body found on road in Reform Village

POLICE are seeking the public’s help in identifying a man whose body was found with gunshot wounds at Reform Village on the night of December 16.

The victim, of East Indian descent, was brown in complexion and estimated to be in his early 40s.

The police said he had short grey hair on his head and beard, an oval face, a medium build, and was about five feet eight inches tall.

Around 10.55 pm, estate constables Mollon and Ashby and security officer Knight of TT Security Services were on patrol along Reform Road in the Ste Madeleine police district, where they observed the body of a man lying motionless on his back in the middle of the roadway.

There were gunshot wounds to the head and spent shells nearby.

The officers alerted their seniors, who were also on patrol, and the Gasparillo Police Station was notified.

Among the first responders were PCs Garcia and Mazelie.

The victim was wearing a green T-shirt, three-quarter pants, green rubber slippers and grey socks.

Officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region Three, also responded and gathered evidence.

Investigators recovered seven spent shells (CBC 9mm Luger), two projectiles, a deformed projectile and a cellphone.

A DMO viewed the body and ordered that it be removed pending an autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

Anyone with information that may assist in identifying the victim is urged to call the HBI at 652-0495, the Ste Madeleine Police Station at 653-1023 or the nearest police station.

Cops find body of man on roadside in Corinth, death unclassified

THE body of a man was found on the roadside in Corinth on the afternoon of December 9.

The man, who had no fixed address, was identified by the police as 39-year-old Keion Phillip. So far, investigators have classified the death as unclassified.

Phillip had injuries to his nose, with blood found in and around his nose and eyes.

Officers from the Ste Madeleine Police Station responded to an anonymous call and found the man’s body on Murchison Castle Street, off Naparima Mayaro Road.

Among the first responders were Sgt Harripersad and WPC Knights.

The man was found lying on his back, wearing a black T-shirt, blue long track pants folded below the knee, black boxers, and black slippers.

Emergency Health Services (EHS) personnel were also alerted but found no signs of life.

Insp Teeluck, along with other officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, visited the scene and gathered evidence.

DMO Dr Santlal declared Phillip dead at 5.04 pm and ordered the body be removed to the mortuary of the San Fernando General Hospital for safekeeping, pending an autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

Also visiting the scene were acting ASP Charles and Sgt Gobin.

WPC Knights is continuing the investigation.

Enterprise man gunned down, woman wounded

ONE man is dead, and a woman hospitalised after a shooting in Enterprise, Chaguanas, on the night of December 4.

Shakeem Breedy, 25, of Circular Drive in Enterprise, was declared dead at 7.44 pm at the Chaguanas Health Centre.

Minutes earlier, at around 7.30 pm, Breedy and the woman were at her home, in the same community, in the front gallery, when two men, both with guns, got out of a black Nissan Tiida.

The gunmen ran into the gallery and opened fire on the two, hitting both.

The gunmen returned to the car and escaped.

A passer-by took Breedy and the woman to the Chaguanas Health Facility, where Breedy later died.

The woman was transferred to the Mt Hope hospital and was said to be in stable condition.

Police from the Central Division and the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, visited the scene and gathered evidence.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

The fatal shooting was the second in the community in the past few weeks.

On November 22, welder Dwayne Baynes, 33, was riding a bike along Mano Trace, near Crown Trace in Enterprise, when he was shot.

Baynes, of Crown Trace, Enterprise, died at the scene.

Police were unable to say if both killings were related.

The investigation is ongoing.

Couva man, shot two weeks ago, dies

TWO weeks after a 24-year-old newspaper delivery driver was shot and wounded in Freeport, he died in hospital.

Antonio Sylvester, of Old Southern Main Road, Mc Bean Village in Couva, died on November 28 at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH).

He had been shot around 12.30 am on November 14 while seated in a parked Toyota Aqua at Beaucarro Road, near Malique’s Sports Bar.

According to reports, a gunman hiding in nearby bushes ambushed Sylvester and fired several shots, hitting him.

In an attempt to escape, the injured man drove a short distance before crashing into a tree.

The shooter fled in an unknown direction, and Central Division police were alerted.

Among the first responders were PCs Sohan, Persad, and Cummings, who transported Sylvester to the Couva District Health Facility. He was later transferred to SFGH, where he died.

No arrests have been made.

The Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, is conducting an investigation.

New Grant villager charged with double murder after deadly fire

ALMOST two years after an elderly woman and her 63-year-old special needs son died in a fire that gutted their home in New Grant, a villager has been charged with double murder.

On November 17, Geewan Jagessar, 46, of School Trace, appeared in the High Court (South Court B) before Master Kimitria Gray, charged with the murders of Surujdai Soogrim, 92, and her son Boysie “Boya” Sonnyboy.

The charges allege that on December 10, 2023, Jagessar poured a flammable substance on the home of the mother and son, also from School Trace, and set it ablaze while they were inside.

Both victims died in the fire.

Attorneys Subhas Panday and Kiran Panday represented the accused, while legal officer Cpl Reagan Ramanan prosecuted during the hearing.

PC Flavenny of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, laid the charges after consulting with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Jagessar was detained by police last week.

The case was adjourned to May 26, 2026.

Williamsville man killed with own gun during fit of anger

The normally quiet community of Whiteland in Williamsville was rocked by a tragic incident on November 7, which resulted in the shooting death of 37-year-old Stephen Vialva.

A close male relative, 39, was assisting police with their investigations on November 8.

Vialva, a labourer, died at his mother’s home on Paradise Avenue shortly after 3 pm.

He lived alone a short distance away, and relatives said he had a history of terrorising both people in the community and his family.

Vialva’s mother, Elizabeth Atwell, and other relatives were at the home when the incident took place.

Atwell, a mother of seven, has eye problems and had previously obtained restraining orders against her son owing to his disorderly and violent behaviour.

According to reports, Vialva, in a drunken rage, threatened to wipe out his relatives.

He visited his mother’s house, and he left the house, saying he was going to get his gun.

Vialva returned moments later, and an argument quickly escalated into a scuffle.

During the altercation, a 39-year-old male relative tried to disarm Vialva, but two shots were fired, striking Vialva.

The relative sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged from the hospital.

Police recovered a pistol, along with a magazine and two rounds of ammunition, at the scene.

Investigators believe that, had the relative not intervened, several family members, including children, could have been seriously harmed or killed.

While the police are not treating the death as a homicide, they are classifying it as an “occurrence,” meaning the death is being recorded as a shooting incident pending further investigation.

On November 8, a relative revealed that Vialva had been terrorising the family for the past 17 years, and his behaviour got worse whenever he was intoxicated.

The relative recalled that, on the day of the incident, Vialva arrived at the family home, drunk and angry.

He left, and when he returned, he was shirtless and had a gun tucked into his waistband, along with two beer bottles.

Vialva ordered a man driving a car into the narrow street to leave.

When the driver hesitated, Vialva threw the bottles at the car, causing the driver to reverse out of the street.

The relative described the chaotic scene, saying, “I started to calculate in my head, and I realised that was not called for. Everything was good before he came drunk. He started ripping clothes off the line and damaging the washing machine.”

Seeing the escalating situation, another male relative decided to take his children and leave.

Moments later, two gunshots rang out, and Vialva was found dead at the scene.

Acting Cpls Sookdeo and Douglas, along with PC Maharaj, were among the first responders.

Police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, police were also alerted.

Newsday learnt that Vialva had several pending cases, including a breach of a protection order. He had also been charged with various offences such as kidnapping, assault and robbery.

Sgt Suliman of the Gapsarillo Police Station is leading the investigation.

Pundit at murdered mom, son’s funeral reminds of importance of family

A pundit who officiated at the joint funeral for a murdered woman and her son has described the moment as a deep sorrow not only for the family but for the entire nation, as he urged people to guide each other toward positive choices.

“It is important for us, as young people, as adults, as parents, as custodians, to make good choices, to advise our children and family to walk the path of truth,” Pt Artma Maharaj told Newsday at the funeral.

“Everything has consequences, and whatever the situation would have been, it is indeed a very sad day. We pray that God’s hands would guide the family and bless them and give them the strength they need during this time.”

On October 19, on the eve of the Divali holiday, Maharaj performed the final rites for murder victims, Gracelyn “Momin” Ramberan, 48, and her son Randy “Jacks” Rampersad, 26, of Friendship Village in San Fernando.

The two were gunned down at the family’s home before dawn on October 10.

Rampersad, a labourer, was Ramberan’s only child.

Rampersad’s father, Vijay Rampersad, and Rampersad’s wife, Kimberly Rampersad, were wounded but survived.

Murder victims Gracelyn “Momin” Ramberan, 48, and her son Randy “Jacks” Rampersad, 26, of Friendship Village.

Gunmen stormed into the house and opened fire, hitting the four relatives. The mother died in the house, while the son collapsed and died on the roadside at the front of the family’s home.

The survivors were taken to the San Fernando General Hospital. They were at the funeral comforted by relatives.

The pundit stressed it was a tragic day, not just for the family but for the village and the country at large.

“It is also a reminder to us of the fragility of life, the importance of families, and the network of families making good decisions and keeping together,” Maharaj said.

“It is important for us to reflect that the death of these two have made an indelible mark on all of us. Yet as we pray and comfort the family, we also think of the others who have lost loved ones. ”

The bodies were first taken to the family’s home, then to the Shore of Peace (Mosquito Creek) cremation site in La Romaine.

They were created side by side, in the same pyre, both dressed in Indian wear.

Offering messages of love to the grieving family, the pundit added, “We do feel for them and all we can do is offer our prayers, which will be a platform during this time of the year. May Bhagwan bless the souls and may Bhagwan bless us all.”

Southern Division and Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, Police are investigating.

The killers remained at large.

Marabella woman stabbed to death

Even in her final moments, a mother of two from Marabella expressed concerns for her nine-year-old son’s safety, mustering all her strength to urge him to run for his life.

Ikeisha “Freeda” Wildman, 43, of Theresa Street, in an area known as The Line, was stabbed to death on the night of October 6 by men who stormed into the house where she was with her son.

After being stabbed, she cried out for her son, urging him to run.

In agony, she stumbled to the back door and fell down the stairs, landing on the ground outside.

The child, who was in another part of the house, rushed to her side but was unable to help.

He alerted other relatives nearby, who quickly put her in a car and rushed her to the San Fernando General Hospital, where she was declared dead.

The stabbing occurred around 7.30 pm on October 6.

The killing marks the second tragedy to strike the family in the past three years. Ikeisha Wildman’s brother, Atiba Wildman, was gunned down by a group of men in the area three years ago.

Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, police are investigating.

Pleasantville man, 38, gunned down

THE shooting death of Pleasantville father of two, Ken Wilkinson, over the weekend has left his family confused and heartbroken.

Wilkinson, 38, of Brassia Drive, Orchid Gardens, was gunned down shortly after 7 pm on September 27, after receiving a phone call and walking along the street.

Speaking at the family’s home on September 28, his aunt, Emelda Wilkinson, said as soon as he received the call, he rushed out of the house.

“I did not know where he went,” she said.

She said she was at home, and another male relative returned from work. They decided to leave together to go to a supermarket in San Fernando.

While the relative was reversing out of the driveway, a neighbour warned her not to pass on that side of the street because a body was on the ground.

She said she did not hear any gunshots and never imagined that the victim would have been her nephew.

Taking another route, she and the relative continued to the supermarket. However, while there, she received a call about the tragedy.

Hoping it was not true, she said she returned to confirm.

Trying to hold back tears, the aunt said Wilkinson, as far as relatives knew, had no known enemies.

He previously worked at Rising Star in La Romaine as a cook, but recently decided to leave the job.

Earlier that same day, he had expressed frustration, saying he would not tolerate disrespect or allow anyone to speak down to him.

“My nephew was planning to start his own business, to sell chow in San Fernando and Princes Town.

“He said he wanted to be his own boss. He said he did not want people to talk down to him. He wanted to set up something for his children’s future,” Emelda said.

He had already begun fixing a cart to sell the chow.

“His mother (Marilyn Wilkinson) fainted when she arrived at the scene. She is out of it,” the aunt added.

Speaking about crime nationwide, the grieving aunt said, “It is terrible, ridiculous, and sad.”

According to the police, around 7.15 pm, officers from the Southern Division Task Force were on mobile patrol and received a wireless transmission of a shooting in Pleasantville.

They responded and found a body with gunshot wounds in the roadway along Brassia Drive. No one was around at the time.

Among the first responders were PCs Arbuckle, Rambhajan and Mohammed and WPC Bhagwat.

Insp Mohammed, acting Sgt Johnson, and other officers from the Mon Repos Police Station and Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, also responded and gathered evidence.

DMO Dr Rajnarinesingh viewed the body and ordered that it be taken to the mortuary at the San Fernando General Hospital for safekeeping, pending an autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

Investigators have not yet established a motive.

Cpl Griffith is leading the investigation.

Business owner, 31, gunned down in food outlet

A gunman walked into a food outlet in Central Trinidad around midday on September 11 and shot and killed the business owner, a 31-year-old woman from Chase Village.

Jennell Mohipath, part-owner of Ree’s Kitchen, at the Southern Main Road in Chase Village, next to Rich Gold Hotel, died instantly on the floor of the serving area.

Mohipath, of Church Street, was wearing a black apron, white jersey, brown long pants and slippers.

The business serves breakfast, roti, soup, and barbecue.

Police said around noon, officers received a report of a person being shot.

Officers from the Freeport police station responded and saw the Mohipath’s body with gunshot wounds on the floor of the business.

Police investigators were told that a gunman walked into the food outlet and fired several shots, striking her. She died on the spot.

The killer got into a gold car and escaped along the Southern Main Road.

He was described as being of African descent, medium built, wearing a black fisherman’s hat and a green rag covering his face.

DMO Dr Coldero viewed the body and ordered its removal for safekeeping pending an autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

Among the first responders were PCs Tull and Boodoo and WPC Della.

Police from Central Division and the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three – among them Snr Supt Butler, Supt Persad, Insps Manolal and Khan and Sgts Bhall and Bridgemohan – visited the scene and gathered evidence.

The police have not yet determined a motive.

Although the police searched for the killer, he remained at large.

WPC Knights is continuing investigations.

Princes Town man, 28, on murder charge

A 28-year-old man from Princes Town is expected to face a master in the High Court on September 5, charged with the murder of a fellow villager.

Labourer Felix McLean, of Railway Road, is alleged to have stabbed Sherwin Balkaran, 40, of Naparima Mayaro Road, during an attack near the home of Balkaran’s parents.

Balkaran’s body was found on Railway Road around 5.30 am on August 24.

Reports are Balkaran was speaking with two men near a shop when an argument broke out, during which he was stabbed with a knife. He collapsed nearby and died at the scene.

Cpl Griffith of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, laid the charges after receiving instructions from acting Director of Public Prosecutions Sabrina Jaglal on September 4.

Supt Persad, together with ASP Maharaj and Sgt Bridgemohan, all of the Homicide Bureau, led the investigations.

The accused is expected to appear in the South B Court.

Pleasantville shooting victim dies at hospital

LESS than an hour after a gunman opened fire on a group of men in Pleasantville on the night of August 20, a man who was shot died at the hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Damian Pierre, 45, of Pleasantville. He was pronounced dead at 9.20 pm.

The shooting occurred near a blue market shed at the corner of Blitz Avenue and Pleasantville Terrace, Blitz Village in Pleasantville.

Enquiries revealed that around 8.40 pm, Pierre was at the shed in the company of several other people when a man, identity and description unknown, approached and opened fire, hitting Pierre.

He was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Around 9.05 pm, officers from the Mon Repos Police Station received a report of the shooting. However, the victim had already been taken to the hospital by the time they arrived at the scene.

Officers from the San Fernando Police Station subsequently went to the accident and emergency department of the hospital, where they were informed that around 8.50 pm, Pierre had been brought in unresponsive by the driver of a black Nissan Note car.

Dr Sookram pronounced Pierre dead at 9.20 pm.

The doctor ordered the removal of the body to the mortuary of the hospital pending transfer for a post-mortem examination at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, also responded and gathered evidence. Six spent 9mm shell casings were recovered at the scene. No other injuries were reported. WPC Rampersad is continuing the investigation.

Venezuelan, 25, gunned down in Carapichaima

A 25-year-old Venezuelan man was found on the roadside in Carapichaima with multiple gunshot wounds on the morning of August 12.

Police identified the victim as Anderson Wilfrero Guerra Perez. He would have turned 26 in September.

His body was found face down near an overgrown area off Waterloo Road. His hands were bound behind his back with straps. He was wearing a pair of long blue jeans, a T-shirt and a black jacket.

Initial reports said a farmer made the gruesome discovery around 8 am and immediately alerted police the Central Division, who were among the first responders.

Police investigators recovered a receipt dated July 22 for the purchase of a black Aqua car for $40,000 at the scene.

Officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, were also alerted. They visited the scene and gathered evidence.

No arrests have been made.

No arrests yet in Barrackpore pensioner’s murder

Sources from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, have confirmed that no one is currently in custody in connection with the stabbing death of a 75-year-old pensioner, whose decomposing body was found at his home in Barrackpore last month.

On August 2, police said the investigation remains active, but no one has been detained.

On the afternoon of July 20, the body of Nardeo Bachan was discovered on a bed at his home on New Colonial Road. There were no signs of forced entry.

A few days later, an autopsy performed at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, revealed that he died from multiple stab wounds. Investigators from the homicide bureau were subsequently notified.

Bachan was last seen alive on the night of July 17, riding his bicycle.

A relative who lives nearby noticed a foul odour coming from the house. When he looked through a window, he saw the body inside.

Barrackpore police were immediately notified.

Relative in Couva woman’s murder still in custody

The “victim” and lone witness in what was first believed to be a violent home invasion in Couva that claimed the life of a 47-year-old close female relative remained in police custody up to July 24 as the murder suspect.

The victim, Kamnee Thackurdeen, was shot at her home on Fire Station Road on the night of July 22. She was taken to the Couva District Health Facility in critical condition and later transferred to the hospital.

The officers found her unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was lying on her back in a room.

While removing her, investigators found a revolver under her.

Thackurdeen, who would have turned 48 on December 25, died the next day, on July 23, at the San Fernando General Hospital.

Central Division initially responded to a report of a wounding shortly after 9 pm on July 22.

The first responders included officers from the Task Force (Area South) and Couva CID, who were told that an unknown gunman walked into the house around 8.35 pm and announced a robbery.

A gunshot was fired shortly after, and the alleged shooter fled in an unknown direction.

The 45-year-old relative was not injured.

Further investigations revealed that the initial report did not align with observations, and officers subsequently detained the suspect.

Police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, were alerted.

The motive is believed to be domestic-related.

On July 23, hours after she succumbed, the police via social media offered condolences to Thackurdeen’s family and assured the public of their continued commitment to a thorough investigation.

An autopsy is set to take place at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

Charges are yet to be laid, and the investigation is ongoing by the homicide bureau.

Freed murder accused back in custody

DAYS after a 39-year-old murder accused from Bank Village in Carapichaima was freed by a master in the High Court owing to delays in prosecuting his case, he was rearrested and is expected to appear in court charged with the same offences.

Anil “Budett” Roopnarine, 39, of Bank Village in the Freeport district, is expected to face a master in the Port of Spain High Court on July 22.

Only on July 16, when the case was called before a master in the High Court, he was freed as prosecutors had not yet filed an indictment or disclosed evidence against Roopnarine.

The court cited failures to comply with deadlines set by the court.

The accused labourer was charged with the murder of Joshua “Starboi Joshie” Mooniram, 20, the attempted murder of another man, possession of a gun and ammunition, and possession of the gun and ammunition with intent to endanger lives.

The charges stemmed from a shooting on October 13, 2023, when Mooniram was at the home of a friend in Freeport.

After he was freed, the police rearrested him on the same charges.

PC Lall of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, laid the charges.

The police contend that Mooniram and others were accosted by five masked men, one with a gun and the others with cutlasses.

Mooniram and his friend were shot. Mooniram died while the friend survived.

The two victims were taken to the hospital, where Mooniram died.

The accused first faced a Couva magistrate on October 23, 2023.

With the proclamation of the Administration of Justice (Indictable Proceedings) Act, 2011 (AJIPAA) on December 12, 2023, the case was transferred from the Magistrates’ Court to the High Court before a master.

Under this new system, all indictable cases are now heard directly in the High Court by Masters.

This means preliminary inquiries, which were previously held in the Magistrates’ Court, have been eliminated, helping to reduce the backlog of cases in the lower courts.

‘Jojo’ gunned down in Tarodale

AN altercation between two men on the afternoon of July 3 in Tarodale has left one man dead and the other on the run from police.

Labourer Georgio Young, 23, also known as JoJo, of Hope Street, died at the San Fernando General Hospital shortly after his arrival.

According to reports, Young was at Persistence Avenue in the same community around 2.30 pm, when he became involved in a heated argument with another man. The confrontation escalated into a struggle, during which the suspect pulled out a gun.

During the struggle, the weapon fell to the ground, but the suspect quickly retrieved it and shot Young, hitting him. Young fell into a nearby drain, and the shooter ran off.

A resident transported Young to the hospital and the Ste Madeleine police were notified. After Young was declared dead, officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, were also contacted and visited the scene.

The suspect is described as a slim-built man of African descent. He was last seen wearing a green T-shirt and jeans.

No arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing.

Construction worker gunned down on Penal jobsite

A construction worker was gunned down at a jobsite in Penal on July 1. The victim has been identified only as Ganesh.

Initial reports said that around 11.15 am, he was mixing concrete on the roadside at Chittar Trace, off Mohess Road, Penal, in the Barrackpore police district, when the incident occurred.

A black Hilux van reportedly pulled up and stopped. A man got out and fired two shots, hitting Ganesh, who fell to the ground and died. The suspect then left the scene.

Police from the Southern Division and the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three — including Supt Persad and Insps Ragbir and Wilkinson — responded.

Crime scene investigator WPC Nysus and other officers also visited. There were no reports of other injuries. No one has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.
