Justin Jagessar blazes century, Steelpan Titans storm to TTCB U-23 Cup title

Former West Indies Under-19 player Justin Jagessar stole the limelight in the TT Cricket Board (TTCB) Under-23 Cup final at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba on December 13 – scoring a brilliant century to lead his Steelpan Titans team to a 166-run victory over Cocrico Warriors.

Warriors won the toss and opted to bowl, with Jagessar taking the initiative early as the Titans skipper put his team on his back with a knock of 112 from 107 balls. Jagessar’s innings contained 13 fours and two sixes, and by the time he was dismissed in the 37th over, the Titans already had a fantastic platform as they had pushed their score to 248 for four.

Earlier, opener Riyaad Mohammed (28 off 19) got the Titans off to a rapid start in a 33-run partnership with Jagessar in four overs, before the latter put on 57 with Joseph Mendoza (25 off 26) for the second wicket. Jagessar then put on 78 for the third wicket with Nick Ramlal (36 off 39), before adding a further 80 for the fourth wicket with wicket-keeper Matheus Komal (31 off 29) before he was dismissed by fast bowler Joshua James (two for 72).

Jagessar’s dismissal did little to slow the Titans down at the death, as they scored 62 runs in the last four overs with Jayden Kent thumping 26 off ten balls, and lower-order players Jacen Agard (16 off five balls) and Calvin Loubon (15 off seven balls) also chipping in with handy contributions, before they were run out in the 40th and final over as their team posted a formidable 310 for eight.

Left-arm seamer Josh Telemaque led the Warriors bowling attack with figures of two for 59.

Set a revised target of 309, the Warriors’ chase never got off the ground as they were bowled out for 142 by the 29th over with Kovid Bispath (four for 21) and Qadeer Juman (three for 36) wrecking their innings. Wicket-keeper/batsman Gerard Chin and Olando James led the Warriors’ innings by scoring 34 runs apiece, with captain Cristian Rampersad scoring 22. The Warriors had no answer for Bispath as he got the scalps of Khaleem Mohammed (17), Ishamael Ali (duck), Rampersad and Rondell Ramlogan (six) as the opposition slipped from 69 for two to 133 for eight. Juman then got the last two wickets as the Titans sealed the emphatic win to lift the trophy.

Rambarans, Bidaisee star in Red Force Super50 trials

A number of players gave the TT Red Force selectors something to ponder on October 15 with strong performances in the National Senior 50 Overs Cup, which serves as the trials for the regional Super50 Cup, which will be held in Trinidad from November 19 to 29.

At the National Cricket Centre (NCC), Couva, Shatrughan Rambaran and recent West Indies debutant Navin Bidaisee put in fine performances as they helped the Cocrico Warriors to an emphatic 116-run victory over Steelpan Titans in a rain-affected affair.

Meanwhile, at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BLCA), Tarouba, opener Cephas Cooper, Andrew Rambaran and young leg-spinner Aneal Rooplal were among those who played key roles in the Soca Strikers’ 106-run victory over the Scarlet Blazers.

Batting first in Couva, the Warriors made a commanding 275 for four off 37 overs in the shortened contest before bowling out the Titans for just 180. Opening the batting, Shatrughan (111 off 101 balls) was a key stay in the Warriors’ innings and shared in three meaningful partnerships before his dismissal in the 36th over. He struck five sixes and two fours in his knock and shared an opening partnership of 86 with veteran Kjorn Ottley (34), before putting on 129 for the second wicket with Bess Motors Marchin Patriots dasher Crystian Thurton (81 off 57). Thurton was the aggressor in their partnership and hit six fours and three sixes before being dismissed by off-spinner Mark Deyal (two for 30).

Bidaisee, who made his T20 debut for the West Indies versus Nepal last month, then added a watchful 25 off 32. It’s with the ball Bidaisee did his best work, though, as the leg-spinner grabbed four for 29 from five overs – including the scalps of Deyal (35 off 24) and Jesse Bootan (37 off 30).

Chasing a revised target of 297, the Titans also got starts from Kamil Pooran (23) and left-hander Jyd Goolie (36 off 19), but fell well short in their pursuit.

At the BLCA, Cooper (87 off 96) and Andrew Rambaran (65) shared in a 115-run stand for the fourth wicket to guide the Strikers to 250 in 48.1 overs. Dejourn Charles led the Blazers’ attack with three for 54, with Aadian Racha grabbing three for 58.

Andrew returned with the ball to grab two for 37, while Rooplal took three for 25 as the Blazers were bundled out for 144 in the 40th over. Trinbago Knight Riders veteran Terrance Hinds also took two for 11 to help the Strikers to victory. Vikash Mohan (39) and Mbeki Joseph (25) got the only scores of note for the Blazers.

The final of the four-team tourney will be held at the BLCA from 1.30 pm on October 18.

Three players hit fifites, but rain spoils party in Super50 trials

TRINIDAD and Tobago Red Force hopefuls were robbed of the opportunity of a full day’s tune-up on October 8 when the two games in the TT Cricket Board’s National Senior 50-Overs Cup were rained out.

At the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, three batsmen scored fifties for the Scarlet Blazers versus the Cocrico Warriors, but their team’s promising innings was cut short in the 44th over with the score on 271 for five. Opening batsman Mbeki Joseph (five) was dismissed early by former Windies pacer Shannon Gabriel, before Jeremy Solozano (76 off 81 balls) and Red Force skipper Joshua Da Silva (57 off 46) put on 100 runs in 15 overs before the latter retired hurt in the 19th over.

With Da Silva heading back to the pavilion, Vikash Mohan (51 off 50) also showed good form and put on 69 with Solozano before the latter was dismissed by Matthew Patrick, who grabbed figures of two for 42. Solozano hit seven fours and two sixes in his knock. Justin Jagessar (32 off 28) and Daniel Williams (21 not out off 24) both got starts before the rain prematurely brought an end to the Blazers’ innings and the game as a whole.

At the National Cricket Centre, Couva, no play was possible between the Soca Strikers and Steelpan Titans, who both registered wins on the opening day of the tourney on October 4. The final matches in the preliminary round of the four-team preparatory tourney will be played on October 15, when the Titans face the Warriors at NCC and the Blazers meet the Strikers at the BLCA. The tournament is being used as preparation for players vying to make the Red Force squad for the upcoming CG United Super50 tournament.

Presentation Chaguanas prep for SSCL premiership repeat

AFTER waiting 12 years to celebrate another PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) premiership division title, Presentation College Chaguanas coach Kelman Kowlessar knows expectations will be high heading into the new season, which is expected to bowl off on January 21.

“Pres,” captained by Justin Jagessar, sealed the 2024 50-over league crown at their school ground last March. The match was well attended as students, Presentation old boys and staff all witnessed the moment Pres clinched the title in the 47-over contest.

Pres Chaguanas batted first and were limited to 158/8 in 47 overs before Presentation College San Fernando were dismissed for 127 in 40.2 overs.

Spectators stormed the field when Pres Chaguanas completed the last-round win against brother school Presentation San Fernando, which would have made the title even sweeter.

“It is an excellent feeling to know that the principal (Dr Rene Wihby), the staff and all the students (support us),” Kowlessar said. “After winning the league last year it brought back that sense of pride and glory to Pres, so everyone is back on board (and) even more excited this year to see what we can deliver.”

Kowlessar said Pres are not looking too far ahead.

“People will have expectations, but myself and the manager Mr Roland Hosein have been doing most of the manager’s work and planning. We are just taking one game at a time. We have our strategy which we are hoping will work out this year, but our intention is just to take one game at a time and build from there.”

The school has a rich history in cricket producing many TT and West Indies cricketers including wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin, batsman Adrian Barath and fast bowler Jayden Seales.

Like all schools, Pres will have to cope with the loss of players because of students graduating.

Jagessar is one of about five or six players Pres will have to manage without in the coming season. Brandon Phillip and Ramone Sawh are two other players who left the school.

Kowlessar is still confident his team can challenge for the title. “We would have had a lot of Under-16 players moving up. We think we have a good chance this year as any other team.”

He knows a few teams are contenders every season and cannot be taken lightly. “I know Vishnu Boys, Pres Sando, Naparima, Fatima – all these teams have good players.”

The Under-16 players are capable and ready for the premiership division, said Kowlessar. “I think they are ready for the challenge and we will see how it goes. We have a lot of talented players like Christiano Ramanan, Saleem Khan, Darius Batoosingh.” Ramnanan and Batoosingh are TT youth players.

Fareez Ali, Luke Ali, Alexander Chase and Aneal Rooplal will also bring pedigree to the squad.

“We have a balanced team. It is just on the day we hope everything works out and click on the match days. We continue to have training every week.”

Pres have been preparing for the 2025 season since September 2024.

Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 cricketers lose to Guyana by 89 runs

Trinidad and Tobago Under-19s lost their second consecutive match of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars 50-Overs Championship as Guyana sealed a comfortable 89-run victory at Cumberland Playing Field in St Vincent on July 26.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Guyana put on a score of 223/8 from their 50 overs. TT had an outside chance in their chase but after losing the third wicket with 89 runs on the board, the remaining batsmen failed to fire and crumbled to 134 all out.

Guyana’s top order batted well as opener Rampertab Ramnauth scored 65 and number three batsman Mavendra Dindyal struck 51. Romeo Deonarine also scored 30 and Thaddeus Lovell 25.

Bowling for TT, Andrew Rambaran bagged 3/46, Fareez Ali 3/48 and Aneal Rooplal 2/30.

In their turn at the crease, TT had a fair start but frittered away as the game progressed. Opening batsman Justin Jagessar top scored for TT with 27 but soaked up a lot of deliveries, while Kyle Ramdoo scored 22.

Doing the damage with the ball for Guyana were Jonathan van Lange with his stellar spell of 4/8, Krsna Singh 3/31 and Golcharran Chulai 2/16.

The result meant TT have just one win in three matches after defeating Leewards by 31 runs in their opener, then going down to Barbados by three wickets in match two.

Other matches on July 26 saw Windward Islands beat Leewards by five wickets at Arnos Vale Playing Field and Barbados edged Jamaica by nine runs at Park Hill Playing Field.

Clarke Road, QPCC get their 2nd wins in T20 Festival

CLARKE Road United and Queen’s Park Cricket Club got their second wins in the ongoing TT Cricket Board (TTCB) Twenty/20 Festival in contrasting fashion against Preysal Sports Club and defending champions Central Sports respectively.

In group B action at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair on Monday, Clarke Road got a four-wicket victory against Preysal after chasing a modest 143-run target.

Batting first, Preysal got to 142 for eight, with both Justin Jagessar and Nathaniel McDavid scoring 41 to lead their team’s charge.

In response, Clarke Road got a flying start in the power play thanks to a 55-run opening partnership between captain Vikash Mohan (32) and Shatrughan Rambaran (26). However, they slipped from 70 for one to 125 for six as teenage spinner Aneal Rooplal (three for 22) threatened to turn the game in Preysal’s favour.

Former West Indies under-19 player Joshua James (ten not out) held his own at the death, though, and he hit a towering six off the final ball of the penultimate over as Clarke Road eventually got over the line with five balls to spare to notch their second straight win. James, who took figures of three for 38, copped the Man-of-the-Match award.

In the late match on Sunday, QPCC got the better of Central Sports by 14 runs in a tense battle between the group A juggernauts. QPCC made a respectable total of 154 for nine, before putting in a quite splendid bowling performance to reduce the opposition to 140 for eight.

West Indies leg-spinner Yannic Cariah (two for 14) was unplayable during his spell. He critically stalled Central Sports during the middle overs and also got the wickets of the dangerous pair of Roshon Primus (three) and captain Lendl Simmons (20) as the Parkites got a second consecutive win.

Patriots end Merry Boys’ hopes in T20 Festival

Bess Motors Marchin Patriots ended Merry Boys’ chances of progressing to the knockout phase of this year’s T20 Festival after holding on to a nail-biting two-run victory, in the early match at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain on Sunday.

Opting to bat first, Patriots’ top order showed good form as number three batsman Crystian Thurton belted 90 runs from 42 balls to lead them to 193/3 after their allotted 20 overs.

Merry Boys showed promise in their chase but lost three wickets in the final over, needing 11 from it for the win, and were eventually restricted to 191/8, falling agonisingly short.

When Patriots batted, they had fair contributions from openers Adrian Ali (38) and Evin Lewis (26 retired). Lewis, however, retired hurt with “light-headedness,” said one of the commentators.

Up stepped Thurton, who was ruthless with the bat, slamming six sixes and eight fours in his 42-ball knock of 90. Kevin Stoute also bolstered the tally with an unbeaten 23.

Set 194 for victory, Merry Boys also had a fine start from opener Saharsh Shwethan (74). Philton Williams (48) and Keonardo Julien (30) kept them in the hunt but a lower-order collapse, along with firm spells from Stoute (3/37) and Jamar Ifill (2/33), saw Merry Boys fall at the final hurdle.

The win for Patriots knocked Merry Boys out of contention for a semifinal spot, despite them still having one game to play.

Meanwhile, in Saturday’s second match, Clarke Road United eked out a one-run victory over crosstown rivals and last year’s runners-up PowerGen Sports Club.

Sent in to bat, Clarke Road were guided to 202/7 from their allotted 20 overs, and barely managed to stop PowerGen who ended on 201/7.

Opening batsman Anthony Bramble slammed 50 runs from 33 deliveries to spearhead their total while lower-order batsman Clevon Kalawan contributed a stellar cameo of 46 not out. Bramble struck four sixes and two fours while Kalawan’s knock came in a quick-fire 16 balls, comprising five sixes and three fours.

Clarke Road skipper Yannick Ottley made 31, Shatrughan Rambaran hit 26, Dejourn Charles 16 and Joshua James 15.

Bowling for PowerGen, fast bowler Uthman Muhammad snagged 2/41 while spinner Jon-Russ Jagessar picked up 2/32.

In reply, Powergen bounced back from a shaky 63/3 to reach within one run of their target, but it was not to be. Jason Mohammed blasted a menacing 98 from 48 balls, which entailed nine sixes and four fours.

Cephas Cooper (44) did well with the bat while Akeil Cooper (24) was also among the runs.

The opening match on Saturday saw Preysal Sports Club trump Profilbau Victoria United by 34 runs.

Batting first, Preysal scored 159/8 courtesy half centuries from Justin Jagessar (56) and Adrian Cooper (51 not out). Clinton Pestano (2/29) was Victoria’s best bowler.

In their turn at the crease, Victoria had good starts from their top order – Shaqkere Paris (60), Marcelle Jones (20) and Kyle Roopchand (16) – but were decimated in the middle and lower orders.

Their last seven wickets fell for just 19 runs, as they went all out for 125 after 18.2 overs. Aneal Rooplal (5/20) bagged a five-for while Cooper picked up 3/19.

Action continues on Monday with Victoria up against Preysal in the first game from 3pm, followed by PowerGen versus Clarke Road from 7pm.

Patriots, QPCC notch fourth wins on rain-hit day in TTCB 50-over tourney

BESS Motors Marchin Patriots and Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) both registered their fourth wins of the 2024 TT Cricket Board (TTCB) Premiership I 50-over competition in a rain-affected fifth round on Saturday.

At Marchin recreation ground, Charlieville, while other games were severely affected by the weather, the Patriots and the visiting Powergen team played out an uninterrupted, low-scoring thriller, with the hosts managing a four-wicket win.

Batting first, a handful of players got starts for Powergen but they were eventually bowled out for 191 in 44 overs. Daniel Williams top-scored with 33, while Mbeki Joseph chipped in with 30. Richie Looknauth led the Patriots bowling with figures of three for 44.

In reply, the Patriots got off to a brisk start thanks to the opening pair of Teshawn Castro (12) and out-of-favour Windies opener Evin Lewis (23 off 16 balls). The hosts had a middle-order wobble, though, and they slipped to 74 for four by the 17th over as the openers were sent back to the pavilion, along with the pair of Crystian Thurton (22) and Kirstan Kallicharan (two).

Number four batsman Rajeev Ramnath (78 not out off 120 balls) took control of the run chase, though, and he dominated a 62-run stand with Looknauth (22) to take the Patriots to 136 for five.

Ramnath also had handy partnerships of 33 and 26 respectively with Kashtri Singh (11) and captain Adrian Ali (17 not out) as the Patriots got over the line with 26 balls to spare.

At the Fatima College grounds in Mucurapo, QPCC got a six-wicket win over Merry Boys in a game that was significantly reduced due to the inclement weather.

Merry Boys were restricted to 143 for eight from 31 overs, with Andrew Rambaran top-scoring with 52. Dexter Sween (two for 26) and West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein (two for 28) shone with the ball for the Parkites.

With QPCC set a revised target of 112 in 25 overs, Sween returned with the bat to hit a brisk 24 off 18 balls as the Parkites clinched the game in the 16th over. Opener Jordan Warner struck an unbeaten 38.

In the other completed game, Preysal got their second win in the tourney when they defeated Victoria United by seven wickets in their rain-affected meeting in Preysal.

Victoria were bowled out for 137 in 25.5 overs in the 31-over contest, with Adrian Cooper grabbing five for 21 to lead the Preysal attack.

Opening batsman Adrian Gomez then played a dominant hand of 82 off 64 balls to steer his team to victory in the 21st over.

The highly-anticipated matchup between defending champions Clarke Road United and 2024 National League Premiership I champions Central Sports was abandoned after just 17.4 overs due to a waterlogged outfield at the Wilson Road recreation ground, Penal. Central Sports had won four straight games in the competition before Saturday’s matches.

Lewis (119) ends QPCC win-streak in TTCB 50 overs tourney

Out-of-favour West Indies opening batsman Evin Lewis scored a match-winning knock of 119 on Sunday, as he helped his Bess Motors Marchin Patriots team to a three-wicket win versus QPCC in the TT Cricket Board (TTCB) Premiership I 50-over competition.

Batting first in Charlieville, QPCC made a competitive score of 285 for eight, with Jordan Warner cracking 120 and West Indies and Trinbago Knight Riders standout Akeal Hosein making 57.

QPCC went into the fourth round of matches on the back of three consecutive wins, but Lewis and the Patriots put an end to the Parkites’ run as they got to the total with 19 balls to spare.

The aggressive left-hander struck nine fours and nine sixes in his 97-ball innings and he featured in two major partnerships. Lewis shared in an 88-run stand for the second wicket with Chryston Thurton (55), while he put on 135 runs for the third wicket with Ritchie Looknauth (46) as the Patriots took control of the contest.

The Patriots wobbled after the fall of Lewis’ wicket in the 35th over, but they got over the line to get their third win of the tourney.

QPCC’s loss was arguably Central Sports’ gain, as the 2024 League champions got their fourth straight win when they got a massive seven-wicket victory against Preysal at Inshan Ali Park after dismissing the opposition for just 115 in 30.4 overs.

All-round Yannic Cariah helps Parkites beat Powergen

AN all-round performance from Yannic Cariah got Queen’s Park across the line, by four wickets, in a tough battle with Powergen on Sunday in the TTCB Premiership 50-overs competition at the Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair.

Batting first, Powergen posted 209 for eight from their 50 overs, led by a half-century from Navin Bediasee. The middle-order batsman struck 74 off 110 balls ( six fours, one six), before he became one of Cariah’s five victims. Opener Cephas Cooper had earlier scored 54 off 83 balls (three fours, three sixes), despite losing his opening partner Daniel Williams for a “duck”.

In reply, Powergen made Queen’s Park work for their runs and reduced them to 56 for three in the 15th over. However, Isaiah Rajah (65) and Cariah (49) played valuable knocks to keep Powergen at bay, despite neither being able to see the victory through. Khary Pierre’s unbeaten 21 settled the Parkites nerves to secure the win.

At Invaders Ground, Felicity, Central Sports made light work of Merry Boys as they strolled to a six-wicket win.

Merry Boys were bundled out for 112 courtesy incisive bowling from leg-spinner Imran Khan (4/21) as well as pacers Marlon Richards (2/15) and Rayad Emrit (2/23). Only Daron Cruickhank (56) was able to resist the Central Sports bowlers.

In reply, the freshly crowned National League champs were steered to 115 for four by Keagan Simmons who stroked 56 not out.

At the Daren Ganga Recreation Ground, Victoria were whipped by Clarke Road in a low-scoring contest. Marcelle Jones and Kyle Roopchand put on 39 runs for the first wicket for Victoria, but no other batsman reached double figures as they were bowled out for just 85.

Vikash Mohan (6/21) was the main destroyer.

Clarke Road wee shaky in their reply, losing six wickets in the chase, However, Yannick Ottley (29 not out) ensured they got the victory.

Defending champs Clarke Road stunned by Preysal

DEFENDING Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board Sunday League 50-Over champions FC Clarke Road United were stunned by the youthful Preysal outfit when round one matches bowled off yesterday.

Preysal, with players still in Secondary school and others just in their early twenties, defeated the more experienced Clarke Road by three wickets at Wilson Road Recreation Ground in Penal.

Clarke Road posted 244 all out in 47.2 overs with TT Red Force opener Vikash Mohan leading the way with 63 off 63 deliveries.

Mohan, who struck seven fours and one six, was ably supported by Clevon Kalawan and Anderson Mahase, scoring 42 and 41 respectively. Justyn Gangoo and Aneal Rooplal, a student at Presentation College, Chaguanas, were the pick of the bowlers for Preysal. Gangoo took 3/18 in ten overs and Rooplal, despite being expensive, grabbed 3/60 in ten overs. Te-shawn Alleyne and Adrian Cooper snatched 2/37 and 2/42 respectively.

In reply, Preysal were in a spot of bother on 167/6 in the 38th over. Alleyne then came to Preysal’s rescue, hitting 60 not out off 58 deliveries to steer the youngsters to 245/7 in 48.1 overs.

Alleyne found the boundary regularly, lashing seven fours and one six in his innings. Earlier in the innings, Presentation College, Chaguanas student Justin Jagessar made 48 off 63 balls and Antonio Gomez hit 43 off 62. Jonathan Williams and Mark Deyal were the best bowlers for Clarke Road. Williams bagged 2/43 and Deyal took 2/54.

At Marchin Recreation Ground in Charlieville, National League Champions Central Sports made a strong start in the 50-Over competition.

Red Force player Terrance Hinds slammed an unbeaten 101 off only 71 balls as Central Sports scored a healthy 290/8 in 50 overs batting first.

Kjorn Ottley also showed form with a knock of 90 off 124 balls. Spinner Derone Davis grabbed 3/28 in ten overs and Teshawn Castro snatched 3/40 in his ten.

Patriots could only muster 173 all out in 29.3 overs in response. Former national youth player Crystian Thurton hit 53. Bowling for Central Sports, leg spinner Imran Khan picked up 6/29 and fellow spinner Mikkel Govia bagged 2/69.

Round two will be played today.

‘Pres’ Chaguanas break 12-year SSCL title drought

STUDENTS, former students, parents, and school staff of Presentation College, Chaguanas all came out in their numbers to witness their school lift the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League premiership 50-Over title in the last round against brother school Presentation College, San Fernando at the former’s school ground yesterday.

The victory ended a 12-year drought for Presentation College, Chaguanas.

Heading into the match, Chaguanas were in first place with San Fernando right on their heels in second place. The supporters for Chaguanas outnumbered the San Fernando contingent and it seemed to work as the central-based Presentation won the title with a 31-run victory. Chaguanas batted first and were limited to 158/8 in 47 overs, before San Fernando were dismissed for 127 in 40.2 overs.

The Chaguanas supporters had their eyes on the match throughout especially in the closing stages as the wickets of the San Fernando batsmen started to tumble. Many of the Chaguanas supporters were vocal, appealing for leg before decisions from the sidelines.

When the final wicket fell it was jubilation as supporters stormed the field to celebrate with the players.

Many TT and West Indies cricketers have passed through Chaguanas, including former West Indies wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin and West Indies opener Adrian Barath. For Chaguanas captain Justin Jagessar, who is in Upper Six, the title was a long time coming.

He said, “To be honest the feeling is indescribable. Since Form One these bunch of guys have been working hard to win an Under-19 (title). We won Under-14 and Under-16, but the Under-19 was the only title we could not get our hands on. Since the beginning of the season, all we wanted was just to win every match, so we went out every game 100 per cent, with our best efforts and we played with our hearts and pride for the school.”

Chaguanas won every match this season, winning all nine matches they played.

For team manager Roland Hosein, the victory meant a lot having been with the school for decades. He said it is a memorable time for the school.

“To be honest the feeling is one of euphoria,” Hosein said. “It is something we’ve been training for since the year before last year when we came out of covid19.”

Hosein said they wanted to make amends after losing out on the crown in 2023. “Last year we came second, but we wanted to go one better this year…it is an indescribable feeling. It has not fully sunk in as yet. It is a special moment for the college. The college has a proud history in cricket. For 12 years to have elapsed before we finally got back our hands on the trophy (is a special feeling).”

Hosein thanked all those who supported the team during the campaign. “They have been following us this whole season. Some of those (past students) tried to get their hands on that trophy and for them to come out here in such large numbers to witness it today (is admirable). It is truly sort of a historic moment for us and for me in my teaching career of 36 years.”

Principal Dr Rene Wihby said, “It is ecstatic, tremendous. It’s surreal…they work so hard during the season and they excelled and they are actually able to achieve success and bring victory home once again to the school.”

Coach Kelman Kowlessar dedicated the win to his father Lalman Kowlessar. The senior Kowlessar coached Presentation College, Chaguanas for decades.

SSCL Star of the Week – Justin Jagessar delivers with 120 in big match for Pres

NEWSDAY continues to focus on the future of cricket in Trinidad and Tobago. Every Friday, a player in the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) premiership 50-over competition will be profiled as the SSCL Star of the Week.

They say big players step up in big games, and in round seven on Tuesday, Justin Jagessar stepped up for Presentation College, Chaguanas against Vishnu Boys’ Hindu College. The match was keenly anticipated, as before the match Pres were in first place in the standings, followed by Vishnu Boys’.

Jagessar, who opened the batting, struck 120 to propel Presentation to a competitive 225 all out in 49.3 overs. Jagessar belted 13 fours and three sixes in his innings.

Fellow opener Cristiano Ramnanan only scored 21, but it was a valuable knock as he supported Jagessar against two quality Vishnu fast bowlers in the early stage of the innings.

In response, Vishnu could only muster 85 all out in 28 overs as Presentation maintained their position at the top of the standings with a 140-run victory.

Presentation played the match on their school ground, with students and teachers showing their support when they had a break from classes.

Newsday spoke to Jagessar about his knock, which helped Presentation move closer to the league title with two rounds remaining.

How did it feel to score a century in such an important fixture?

My century felt really good knowing that I made it in a crucial game, as Vishnu was one of the stronger teams in the tournament.

Did you feel pressure to perform, knowing that quality batsmen Fareez Ali and Jaden Joseph were injured and could not play on Tuesday?

I didn’t feel any pressure per se, but I know I had to step up, as two of our main in-form batters were injured.

Cristiano Ramnanan and yourself did well against the opening Vishnu bowlers. How crucial was that opening partnership in setting up the Pres total?

It was very important that we had a good start and a solid partnership at the top, (but) I still felt that we could have scored a little quicker.

But the partnership was important so that we could’ve set up the game for the players to come in, so that they wouldn’t feel any pressure to score quickly and would be able to bat freely.

What will it mean if Presentation win the title?

It would mean everything for us and the whole school, as we haven’t won the title in years, and also it will show that all our pre-season training and hard work paid off.

What do you think of the support from the students and teachers this season, especially at home games for Pres?

I think that the support was amazing from everyone in school. They cheer us on each game, and their support means the most to us, as it helps motivate us to perform well.

Different players have stepped up during this season. Is this the best schools team you have been a part of?

Well, I have been in Pres since Form one, and this Pres team is probably the best that I have played in. The guys are eager to win, (we) motivate and support each other no matter what is the outcome.

Presentation Chaguanas inch closer to SSCL title after 140-run win vs Vishnu Boys

PRESENTATION College, Chaguanas inched closer to the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League premiership title with a 140-run win over Vishnu Boys’ Hindu College in round seven yesterday to make it seven wins in a row.

The match between Presentation and Vishnu at the former’s school ground was expected to be more competitive as the teams were first and second respectively in the standings heading into the contest. Presentation can seal the crown in the penultimate round next week Tuesday with a victory and if other results go their way.

Batting first, national youth player Justin Jagessar almost single-handedly led Presentation College, Chaguanas to 225 all out in 49.3 overs with an innings of 120. Jagessar, an opener, batted for more than 40 overs, anchoring the innings as wickets fell around him.

The second highest score for Presentation was 21 by Christiano Ramnanan. Despite Jagessar’s form, Vishnu did well to limit the boundaries scored during the innings as Presentation progressed to 167/3 in 40 overs.

When overs started to run out, Jagessar started to attack the Vishnu bowlers. Attempting another aggressive shot, Jagessar was caught at long off. He cracked 13 fours and three sixes.

Vishnu Boys were strong in the field led by fast bowler Daniel Holder who showed his athleticism fielding in the deep. Wickets contined to fall as Presentation lost seven wickets in the last ten overs.

Spinners Ishmael Ali and Aaron Basant were the chief destroyers grabbing 3/12 and 2/32 respectively.

In reply, Vishnu Boys did not get close to the target as they were skittled out for 85. Basant tried to keep Vishnu Boys in the contest with a knock of 47, but it was not enough.

Aneal Rooplal and Alexander Chase did the bulk of the damage for Presentation taking 3/4 and 2/10 respectively.

Presentation coach Kelman Kowlessar said, “I think today the guys executed their plans perfectly starting with Justin and Christiano Ramnanan at the top and they saw out the two opening fast bowlers (Daniel Holder and Nashayn Bethelmy) and the spin of Ishmael Ali.”

Kowlessar said after ten overs Presentation were only 30-odd as the Vishnu bowlers did not give away anything.

He said Jagessar was confident before the match bowled off. “Even before he came (to the ground) he said this is his game. He really put his head down and led from the front.”

Kowlessar said his team’s batting is not as strong as it was earlier in the season with injuries to Fareez Ali and Jaden Joseph.

There is a proud cricket history at Presentation College, Chaguanas, but the title has eluded the team in recent years. Kowlessar said it was heart warming to see all the support yesterday.

“Apparently the message got out in the school today (yesterday)…and even when the bell rang (at the end of lunch) they won’t going back to their classes, teachers had to come and find them. It means a lot to the school…the teachers came out, the principal was out there.”

Presentation College, San Fernando are still in with a chance to win the title also, after winning by default over El Dorado East Secondary to move into second position.

In other matches, Naparima College got past Fatima College by four wickets; St Benedict’s College continued their late season form with a five-wicket win over St Mary’s College; and Hillview crushed Princes Town West Secondary by 255 runs.

Top clash in SSCL round seven

VISHNU Boys Hindu College can move to the top of the standings with a win over leaders Presentation College, Chaguanas and if they earn enough bonus points when the teams clash in round seven of the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) premiership division on Tuesday.

The teams will square off at the Presentation College school ground from 10 am.

Presentation have been perfect this season with six wins from as many matches and have a total of 112 points. Vishnu Boys are right on their heels in second position with 99 points after earning five victories in six matches.

Vishnu Boys team manager Rajesh Persad said his players are ready for the challenge ahead. He said, “The bunch of guys are very confident going into the game.”

Both teams are loaded with ability with many of them representing national youth teams in the past. Andrew Rambaran and Ishmael Ali both have Trinidad and Tobago experience on the Vishnu Boys team and Fareez Ali, Alexander Chase, Justin Jagessar and Darius Batoosingh are among those on the Presentation team with national youth experience.

Persad said the teams are familiar with each other.

“The good thing about it is they know a lot of the players. They would have played against them on several occasions for zones and stuff like that. They know that both sides on paper have very strong teams and very similar, so they are confident.”

Despite having a record of five wins from six matches, Persad said Vishnu Boys can perform at a higher level. “No you have not seen the best yet. Once we have all our players clicking you could see a show. Most of the fellas they are clicking in between, but if they click as a unit we could be looking at something special.”

Persad, asked who he is hoping would take the lead on Tuesday, said, “The captain and the vice-captain, Andrew Rambaran and Ishmael Ali. We are also looking in the bowling department at our fast bowlers as well to do some initial damage.”

Nashayn Bethelmy and Daniel Holder are the two fast bowlers expected to grab wickets. Presentation College, San Fernando will have a bye on Tuesday as their opponent El Dorado East Secondary are expected to forfeit their remaining matches this season because of challenges in fielding a team.

Riyaad Mohammed, Caiden Mack star in Round 4 of schools cricket

RIYAAD Mohammed and Caiden Mack both delivered quality performances to lead Presentation College, San Fernando and Fatima College to commanding wins in round four of the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League premiership division yesterday.

Mohammed cracked 107 to guide Presentation College, San Fernando to 243/7 in 50 overs batting first against St Mary’s College at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair. Saif Ali struck 35 and Levi Ghanny pitched in with 33 not out to help Presentation post the competitive total.

Samir Saroop and Jaden O’Brien grabbed 2/27 and 2/32 respectively for St Mary’s.

In reply, St Mary’s were dismissed for 133 in 40.4 overs. Mikaeel Ali struck 58 for St Mary’s, but 3/13 from Brendan Boodoo and 3/27 from Aadian Racha ensured the comfortable win for Presentation.

At Honeymoon Park in Tunapuna, Mack propelled Fatima to a 207-run victory over Hillview College.

Fatima scored 272/6 in 50 overs with Zachary Siewah hitting 91 not out to lead the charge. Isaiah Fernandes made 48 and Mack 42 to help Fatima post the massive total and bowling for Hillview, Rajeev Ramgoolie picked up 2/51.

In response, Hillview were skittled out for 65 in 25.2 overs as Mack bagged 5/14 and Joshua Davis snatched 2/17.

Renaldo Fournillier was the top scorer for Hillview, hitting 22.

At the Moruga Multi-sport Youth and Sport Facility, the match between Princes Town West Secondary and El Dorado East Secondary was not completed. Due to road works in Chaguanas, El Dorado arrived at the ground when the match was scheduled to start. An official of El Dorado’s team, who had some of the equipment, went to the wrong ground adding to a further delay.

In an effort to start the match, El Dorado’s team list was written up by another official.

When Princes Town were 97/4 batting first, it was discovered that one of El Dorado’s bowlers was not on the team declaration list and as a result, Princes Town were awarded the match.

Jaden Joseph’s ton keeps Presentation Chaguanas on top; Andre Suglal smashes 113 in Hillview win

PRESENTATION College Chaguanas maintained its position at the top of the standings with a comprehensive win over Fatima College at the former’s school ground in round two of the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) premiership division on Tuesday.

Opener Jaden Joseph struck his second century in as many weeks for Presentation to help the home team crush Fatima by 143 runs. Joseph slammed four fours and seven sixes in his innings of 111 off 138 balls to steer Presentation to 243/4 in 50 overs.

Justin Jagessar, who combined to put on 97 for the first wicket with Joseph, hit 49 off 81 deliveries. Luke Ali and Fareez Ali struck 31 and 24 not out respectively to help Pres post a competitive total. Fast bowler Zachary Siewah was the best bowler for Fatima, taking 2/50 in ten overs.

In reply, Fatima got off to a disastrous start being reduced to 4/2 after five overs. Siewah tried to keep Fatima in the contest with some lusty blows, but at the other end, Caiden Mack struggled to score. When Mack was dismissed for seven off 55 deliveries and Siewah fell shortly after for 46 off 39 balls, Fatima had a mountain to climb with the score 68/4 after 19.3 overs.

Wickets continued to tumble as Fatima were all out for 100 in 36.2 overs. Ramone Sawh was the chief destroyer for Pres, grabbing 3/26 in nine overs.

At Honeymoon Park in Tunapuna, Hillview posted a massive 334/6 in a shortened 42-over match against El Dorado East Secondary. Andre Suglal was the star with the bat for Hillview cracking 113 off 104 balls, including 15 fours and one six. Zameer Ali was the best bowler for El Do with 3/56 in 9.3 overs.

In reply, El Dorado could only muster 118 in 36.2 overs. Kylash Jattan top scored with 20 for El Do and bowling for Hillview, Rajeev Ramgoolie picked up 4/19 in 6.2 overs.

It has been a tough start for newly-promoted Princes Town West Secondary this season, but Josiah Caramally had something to smile about as he took 5/35 against St Mary’s College. However, St Mary’s still won the match by 59 runs. The Saints posted 151 all out, then restricted Princes Town West to 92/7 in a 37-over match.

In the other round two match, Naparima College defeated St Benedict’s College by two wickets.

The final round two match between Vishnu Boys Hindu College and defending champions Presentation College, San Fernando has been postponed to Friday.

Jagessar leads Central Zone to U-15 crown

JUSTIN JAGESSAR earned “Man-of-the-Match” honours as he led Central Zone to victory on Thursday against South East in the final of the TT Cricket Board’s Inter Zone Under-15 tournament at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva.

The Central Zone captain lashed a brilliant undefeated 97 as his team racked up 204 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the allotted 50 overs and then saw his team dismiss their opponents for just 149 in 48.3 overs to win by a margin of 55 runs with nine balls to spare.

It was the second straight year Central has captured the Under-15 crown. Leading youth prospect Jagessar also took the prize for the top score in the final. Also contributing to the winning total were Rajesh Maharaj and Fareez Ali who made 20 runs each.

For South East, who had played unbeaten in the competition before the final, Christon Ramkissoon took two wickets for 33 runs in his ten overs, and overall performed well with the ball as they did all season with the five other bowlers used claimed a wicket each.

At one stage, Central were under the gun at 26 for three in the 12th over, but a composed knock by Jagessar, who hit seven boundaries and a maximum, steadied the ship pulled the defending champions out of trouble.

He shared important partnerships of 52 runs with Maharaj for the fourth wicket; 49 for the sixth wicket with Ali; and 31 for the eighth wicket with Brandon Deonarine to rescue the Central campaign from a precarious position after winning the toss and taking first knock in brilliant sunshine.

In their run chase, South East failed to capitalize on the useful work accomplished by their bowers as only opening batsman Romario King starred with the bat with an attractive innings of 45 runs with three boundaries.

He received good support from Nickyle Jalim who chipped in with 33 while Nathaniel Pulchan (18) and Rahul Ali (14) offered limited resistance as the Central Zone bowlers made telling inroads in the South East Zone batting.

After losing their first wicket with the score on 17, King and Jalim put on 68 for the second wicket but from then on it was a steady procession back to the pavilion as Central seized the initiative and tightened their grip on the match.

Emilio Villafana captured two wickets for 24 runs; Tommy Walsh grabbed two for 26; and Deonarine snapped up two for 34, while Luke Ali and Fareez Ali got one apiece in a devastating Central Zone bowling exhibition.

Sharing the individual honours in the final were South East’s Romario King who was adjudged best fieldsman for his two superb catches at the top of the Central Zone innings, and Emilio Villafana for the champions, voted best bowler for his excellent return of two wickets for 24 runs in ten overs with one maiden.

The nation’s youth cricketers now turn their attention to the Under-17 Inter Zone competition which gets underway on Wednesday, March 13.
