Three players hit fifites, but rain spoils party in Super50 trials

TRINIDAD and Tobago Red Force hopefuls were robbed of the opportunity of a full day’s tune-up on October 8 when the two games in the TT Cricket Board’s National Senior 50-Overs Cup were rained out.

At the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, three batsmen scored fifties for the Scarlet Blazers versus the Cocrico Warriors, but their team’s promising innings was cut short in the 44th over with the score on 271 for five. Opening batsman Mbeki Joseph (five) was dismissed early by former Windies pacer Shannon Gabriel, before Jeremy Solozano (76 off 81 balls) and Red Force skipper Joshua Da Silva (57 off 46) put on 100 runs in 15 overs before the latter retired hurt in the 19th over.

With Da Silva heading back to the pavilion, Vikash Mohan (51 off 50) also showed good form and put on 69 with Solozano before the latter was dismissed by Matthew Patrick, who grabbed figures of two for 42. Solozano hit seven fours and two sixes in his knock. Justin Jagessar (32 off 28) and Daniel Williams (21 not out off 24) both got starts before the rain prematurely brought an end to the Blazers’ innings and the game as a whole.

At the National Cricket Centre, Couva, no play was possible between the Soca Strikers and Steelpan Titans, who both registered wins on the opening day of the tourney on October 4. The final matches in the preliminary round of the four-team preparatory tourney will be played on October 15, when the Titans face the Warriors at NCC and the Blazers meet the Strikers at the BLCA. The tournament is being used as preparation for players vying to make the Red Force squad for the upcoming CG United Super50 tournament.

TTVF selects new coaches to lead men’s, women’s volleyball programmes

ESSIEL Seecharan and Deon Hutchinson have been chosen to lead the national men and women’s volleyball programmes respectively, as TT gears up for the competitive international season.

This was confirmed in a TT Volleyball Federation (TTVF) statement on April 14. Seecharan, who received training in Cuba through a national scholarship, currently works with TTVF’s major partner, University of TT. He will be supported by Sean Morrison, Saleem Ali, and Curtis Burkette.

Businessman Hutchinson is supported by a team that includes the seasoned Nicholson Drake, who previously served as assistant coach to Francisco “Panchy” Cruz.

Hutchinson will be joined by Courtnee Mae Clifford, a highly qualified former player, and Lateisha “Chucky” Joseph, a former player and member of the Defence Force.

These coaching teams will oversee the senior national squads, under-23 teams, and the newly established elite talent programme, “designed to accelerate the development of physically gifted athletes.”

The national U17 male and female programmes will be directed by Burkette and Ali, respectively, who were nominated by their clubs, Zenith and Glamorgan.

Addressing the appointments of first-time coaches to key leadership positions, TTVF president Daymain Stewart said, “To whom much is given, much is expected. I am confident that these individuals will take ownership of their programs and deliver results for our athletes.”

“We cannot continue with the status quo and expect different outcomes. As we build the ‘one volleyball’ movement, we must share a unified vision and take responsibility for our actions.”

Additionally, over 170 athletes were screened for these programmes. Concurrently, beach athletes showcased their skills in the Trinbago Beach Tour in Chaguanas, competing for a chance to represent Trinidad and Tobago on the Continental Tour. Swedish-based Daynte Stewart and beach volleyball champion Daniel Williams excelled in the men’s category, while Lateisha Joseph, returning after maternity leave, partnered with Apphia Glasgow.

Both teams are now seeking funding to participate in the first leg of the North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) tour in Cuba.

Stewart reaffirmed his commitment to uniting, empowering, and ensuring the sustainability of the sport and urged all stakeholders to get involved, reinforcing that there is room for everyone under the banner of “one volleyball.”

Powergen stay unbeaten in T20 Festival, Victoria get first win

QUICK-FIRE half-centuries from Dejourn Charles (62), Daniel Williams (52) and Navin Bidaisee (51) played crucial roles in affirming Powergen a 46-run win over Merry Boys when the CPL/TKR T20 Festival continued at Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair on March 9.

The Powergen trio batted well to help post a formidable 217/7, taking first strike. Charles’s 62 came from 30 balls and comprised four sixes and six fours.

Williams’s total was derived from 24 deliveries and included two sixes and nine fours, while Bidaisee’s knock was achieved from 34 balls, with three sixes and two fours. Charles and Bidaisee also combined for an 89-run partnership. Videsh Sookhai scored 19.

Topping the bowling for Merry Boys were Justin Manick (2/33) and Jacen Agard (2/38).

In reply, Merry Boys had a relatively slow start, and at 56/4 from 9.3 overs, they had an uphill task to reach the target. And despite Manick (50 not out) and Giovanni Letren (44 not out) opening their hands in the final moments, overs ran out, with Merry Boys getting to 171/5 from 20 overs.

Scyon Charles (3/36) did most of the damage with the ball for Powergen. This was the Penal-based team’s second win in as many matches having defeated Prisons Sports Club by six wickets on March 7.

In the earlier match, Victoria notched their first win from two matches after getting past Victoria United by 11 runs.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Victoria got to 140/7 courtesy of solid knocks from Shehan Jayasuriya and Riyaad Mohammed, who both scored 33. Wicketkeeper Eton Bhal also hit 28 not out while Bryan Boodram (3/18) and Stepphan Mcpherson (2/11) were among the wicket-takers for Prisons.

Chasing 171 for victory, Prisons had a good start from opener Zackery Ragoonath (35). Despite his resilience at the top and an unbeaten 36 runs from Jerve Cummings, Prisons were restricted to 129/9 from their 20 overs.

Both Jordan Samkaran (3/27) and Duane Charles (3/30) bagged three wickets each for Victoria.

The T20 Festival resumes on March 12 with unbeaten Bess Motors Marchin Patriots up against Preysal from 2.30 pm followed by Queen’s Park Cricket Club up versus Yorkshire from 6.30 pm.

Central Sports are the defending champions, but they have lost their opening matches.

Powergen crush Prisons in TTCB premiership one

CENTURIES from Powergen’s opening pair of Daniel Williams (123) and Videsh Sookhai (118) set the stage for a commanding innings and 178-run victory over Prisons Sports in round three of the TT Cricket Board Premiership one at Syne Village in Penal on February 16.

Batting first, Williams and Sookhai put on a powerful 244-run opening stance to steer the hosts to 429/6 declared. Williams cracked three sixes and 13 fours in his 103 balls faced while Sookahi hit three sixes and 17 fours from 82 deliveries.

Akil Cooper scored an unbeaten 50 while Dejourn Charles had 33. Kareem Hamilton (4/103) was Prisons’ best bowler.

In reply, Prisons were wrecked by Navin Bidaisee (7/26) and were all out for 120. Sent back in to bat, they collapsed once more for 131 courtesy 4/32 from both Shaaron Lewis and Samuel Roopnarine.

Sidel Diaz (50) top scored for Prisons in their first innings while Ziacrursees Raghoonath (41) was the best contributor in the second.

In other matches, Kamil Pooran smashed 182 not out while Mikkel Govia snared a combined 7/37 as Central Sports romped to an emphatic innings and 117-run victory over Preysal Sports at Inshan Ali Park in Preysal.

Resuming day two on 262/9 and a 142-run lead in response to Preysal’s feeble 120 first innings score, Central Sports were all out for 312, with Pooran spearheading the charge.

Despite Pooran’s aggression, Nathaniel McDavid still nabbed 5/52 for Preysal.

With a healthy lead of 192, Central Sports put Preysal back in to bat and had them all out for 75 runs courtesy Govia (3/10), who also bagged 4/27 in the first innings. Ronaldo Forrester scored 20.

Leonardo Julien (3/19) was also impressive with the ball while Marlon Richards (2/22) was also among the wickets.

The result kept 2024 winners Central Sports perfect this season, winning three from three.

Allrounders shine in trial matches for new regional T20 tourney

Allrounders Navin Bidaisee, Mikkel Govia and Anderson Mahase had bright performances when the Andrew Rambaran XI and the Kamil Pooran XI engaged in a pair of T20 trial matches at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain Couva on February 11 and 12.

Last month, Cricket West Indies’ director of cricket, Miles Bascombe, hinted that a new regional T20 tourney, tentatively scheduled for April 18-May 11, will be held at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba. The tourney is expected to focus on the development of the region’s under-23 players.

In the first trial match, the Pooran XI made a respectable 162 for nine, with middle-order batsman Matthew Patrick top-scoring with 35 off 32 balls, and Joshua Davis and Pooran scoring 27 and 25 respectively.

Mahase starred with three for 17 in two overs and he got the key scalps of Patrick, Davis and the hard-hitting Govia (five). Abdul-Raheem Toppin and Abdur Juman grabbed two wickets apiece for the Rambaran XI.

In the chase, the Rambaran XI got off to a rapid start as openers Shatrughan Rambaran (29 off 14) and Daniel Williams (27 off 18) got them to 65 before the first wicket fell in the fourth over.

The Rambaran XI slipped to 110 for four by the 11th over as Nicholas Ali (two for 17) got timely blows.

Mahase (33 off 18) then hit two fours and two sixes in a cameo to steer his team closer to safety despite a middle-order wobble.

In the second trial match, the Pooran XI rebounded with a four-wicket win as both Bidaisee (52 not out off 34) and Govia (51 off 31) hit fifties as they successfully chased a 175-run target.

The Rambaran XI were restricted to 174 for eight, with Andrew top-scoring with 47 off 35 and Mahase cracking 36 off 25. Mbeki Joseph chipped in with 32 off 17. Patrick and Ali grabbed two wickets apiece for the Pooran XI.

In the chase, the Pooran XI got over the line with three balls to spare. The Pooran XI were struggling on 52 for five, but Bidaisee and Govia turned the game on its head with a 79-run stand for the sixth wicket, before the former sealed the result with an unbeaten 44-run stand with Sion Hackett (16 not out off eight).

Former Windies wicket-keeper David Williams oversaw the trial matches.

South whip North on final day of Classic

SOUTH secured a big win in the Namalco Construction Services Ltd North/South Classic as they turned the screws on North on the final day at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba on January 12.

North batsmen Andrew Rambaran and Dexter Sween tried their best to prevent a defeat, but their efforts were in vain as they went under by an innings and 68 runs.

Responding to North’s first-innings score of 346, South were bowled out for a mammoth total of 612 – giving themselves a big 266-run lead after the first innings.

Continuing from their overnight score of 552 for eight, South added 60 runs to their total, with lower-order batsman Justin Manick scoring 45. Crystian Thurton (69) and Daniel Williams (56) both helped themselves to fifties in their 105-run partnership for the seventh wicket, to add to the contributions of Jason Mohammed (224) and Cephas Cooper and Jyd Goolie, who both got fifties.

After Isaiah Rajah (42) and Vikash Mohan (33) got North off to a solid start in their second innings with a 77-run opening stand, a collapse ensued as they lost five wickets in quick succession before the dinner break.

Spinners Goolie and Shatrughan Rambaran did the major damage early as they took two wickets apiece, with Dejourn Charles (two) and Tion Webster (duck) both falling cheaply after the openers were removed.

North slipped to 98 for five when Antonio Gomez (six) was bowled by Goolie with a ball which spun and kept very low. North went to the dinner break at 102 for five, but they lost their sixth wicket shortly after the interval when allrounder Joshua James (one) fended a Justyn Gangoo delivery to Cooper at short-leg.

North progressed to 171 for six – still trailing by 95 runs – with the steady Rambaran (52) finding an ally in Sween (28) in a partnership yielding more than 50 runs.

But when Rambaran fell to Mohammed’s off spin for 57 off 119 balls, the writing was on the wall for North.

Joshua Da Silva (75) stars for Da Silva XI in Red Force trial match

Joshua Da Silva (75 off 61 balls) and opener Kjorn Ottley (54 off 51) both scored half-centuries as the Joshua Da Silva XI earned a 65-run victory against the Amir Jangoo XI in the second TT Red Force trial match at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BCLA), Tarouba on October 14.

Da Silva scored 49 in defeat on October 9 as his team fell to a seven-wicket loss to the Bryan Charles XI. In the second game, though, Da Silva’s runs were worth their weight in gold as the Da Silva XI got to a solid score of 287 for eight, before restricting the Jangoo XI to 222.

Ottley and Vikash Mohan (26 off 41) got the innings started with a 74-run stand, before quick wickets by Mikkel Govia (four for 36) and Aadian Racha (two for 22) saw the Da Silva XI slipping to 90 for three by the 19th over.

Isaiah Rajah (42 off 51) and Da Silva restored the innings with a 119-run partnership before the former was trapped lbw by Govia, who lifted the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier Leauge title with St Lucia Kings earlier this month.

After hitting six fours and five sixes in his knock, the right-handed Da Silva became Govia’s third victim when he offered a catch to Joshua James as the Da Silva XI slipped to 224 for five. Govia got his fourth scalp when he dismissed Andrew Rambaran for six in the 42nd over.

With wickets falling around him, allrounder Yannic Cariah (43 not out off 51) struck three fours in an unbeaten knock and ensured the Da Silva XI had a decent end to their innings.

Seamer Shaaron Lewis chipped in with figures of two for 51 from his nine overs and took the wickets of Daniel Williams (11) and Charles (12) at the death.

Jangoo and stylish right-handed batsman Tion Webster both struck fifties in the first trial match, but both batsmen were dismissed cheaply in the second match as Jangoo (three) was dismissed by Justin Manick (one for 32) in the second over, with Webster (one) being dismissed by national under-19 pacer Abdul-Raheem Toppin (three for nine).

The Jangoo XI’s top order had an almighty struggle as they were restricted to 98 for six by the 25th over, with Cephas Cooper (29) and Jyd Goolie (30) being the only top-order players to get starts.

After Toppin wrecked the Jangoo XI top order, Navin Bidaisee (62 off 88) and Shatrughanan Rambaran (55 off 47) brought respectability to the innings with a 93-run stand for the seventh wicket. The partnership was broken by Rajah (one for 11) who dismissed Rambaran in the 41st over, before Charles (three for 18) cleaned up the tail with the wickets of Bidaisee, Govia (15) and Dejourn Charles (five) to give the Da Silva XI the facile win.

The third trial match will be played from 1 pm at the BLCA on October 16. The Red Force are fine-tuning for the 2024 regional Super50 tournament which will be played in Trinidad from October 29-November 23. TT are the regional Super50 holders.

Veteran Imran Khan lights up Chaguanas Mayor’s T10 with 83*

Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) Premiership I teams Bess Motors Marchin Patriots and Central Sports had a topsy-turvy start to the 2024 Chaguanas Mayor’s T10 tournament at the Pierre Road recreation ground in Charlieville on Sunday, as they registered a win and a loss apiece in their two opening matches.

In the tournament’s first match, Central Sports, this year’s TTCB Premiership I National League and Twenty/20 Festival winners, were stunned by Charlieville Super Kings (CSK) in their group A encounter as the latter team romped to a thumping nine-wicket win.

Central Sports made a modest 67 for nine in their allotted ten overs, with CSK racing to victory in the seventh over on the back of a powerful knock by opening batsman Nashawn Latchman who made an unbeaten 40 off 20 balls.

In their second game, though, Central Sports bounced back when they got a thrilling last-ball win against Endeavour Sports Club as they chased a 109-run target with six wickets intact.

Sanjay Jawahir (51 not out) and former West Indies under-19 player Shiva Sankar (50) took Endeavour to a solid 108 for three. However, veteran TT Red Force player Imran Khan rolled back the years as he took Central Sports over the line with a boundary-filled 83 off just 37 balls, which contained eight fours and five sixes.

After left-arm spinner Ahkeel Mollon (four for two) left Central Sports reeling on 12 for four inside three overs, Khan and ex-Windies allrounder Rayad Emrit (22 not out) took their team home with a 97-run stand off 45 balls to keep their team alive in the week-long tourney.

In group B, the Patriots also started the tournament in shaky fashion, when they were handed a heavy 39-run loss by home team Pierre Road Sports in their opening match. Pierre Road made a challenging 113 for six, before reducing Patriots to 74 for nine.

In their second game, Patriots held their nerve as they got a narrow five-run win against Prisons in a low-scoring contest.

Patriots made 69 for four, with wicket-keeper/batsman Daniel Williams making an unbeaten 36 to restore his team’s innings after a wobbly start. Led by the economical Justyn Gangoo (one for two), the Patriots did the trick with the ball as Kadeem Alleyne defended 11 runs in the last over to help them to the nervy win.

After press time on Monday, CSK went in search of their second group A win when they took on Endeavour, while Police, the 2024 Premiership II T20 Festival winners, opened their campaign against Prisons.

Patriots, QPCC notch fourth wins on rain-hit day in TTCB 50-over tourney

BESS Motors Marchin Patriots and Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) both registered their fourth wins of the 2024 TT Cricket Board (TTCB) Premiership I 50-over competition in a rain-affected fifth round on Saturday.

At Marchin recreation ground, Charlieville, while other games were severely affected by the weather, the Patriots and the visiting Powergen team played out an uninterrupted, low-scoring thriller, with the hosts managing a four-wicket win.

Batting first, a handful of players got starts for Powergen but they were eventually bowled out for 191 in 44 overs. Daniel Williams top-scored with 33, while Mbeki Joseph chipped in with 30. Richie Looknauth led the Patriots bowling with figures of three for 44.

In reply, the Patriots got off to a brisk start thanks to the opening pair of Teshawn Castro (12) and out-of-favour Windies opener Evin Lewis (23 off 16 balls). The hosts had a middle-order wobble, though, and they slipped to 74 for four by the 17th over as the openers were sent back to the pavilion, along with the pair of Crystian Thurton (22) and Kirstan Kallicharan (two).

Number four batsman Rajeev Ramnath (78 not out off 120 balls) took control of the run chase, though, and he dominated a 62-run stand with Looknauth (22) to take the Patriots to 136 for five.

Ramnath also had handy partnerships of 33 and 26 respectively with Kashtri Singh (11) and captain Adrian Ali (17 not out) as the Patriots got over the line with 26 balls to spare.

At the Fatima College grounds in Mucurapo, QPCC got a six-wicket win over Merry Boys in a game that was significantly reduced due to the inclement weather.

Merry Boys were restricted to 143 for eight from 31 overs, with Andrew Rambaran top-scoring with 52. Dexter Sween (two for 26) and West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein (two for 28) shone with the ball for the Parkites.

With QPCC set a revised target of 112 in 25 overs, Sween returned with the bat to hit a brisk 24 off 18 balls as the Parkites clinched the game in the 16th over. Opener Jordan Warner struck an unbeaten 38.

In the other completed game, Preysal got their second win in the tourney when they defeated Victoria United by seven wickets in their rain-affected meeting in Preysal.

Victoria were bowled out for 137 in 25.5 overs in the 31-over contest, with Adrian Cooper grabbing five for 21 to lead the Preysal attack.

Opening batsman Adrian Gomez then played a dominant hand of 82 off 64 balls to steer his team to victory in the 21st over.

The highly-anticipated matchup between defending champions Clarke Road United and 2024 National League Premiership I champions Central Sports was abandoned after just 17.4 overs due to a waterlogged outfield at the Wilson Road recreation ground, Penal. Central Sports had won four straight games in the competition before Saturday’s matches.

Lewis (119) ends QPCC win-streak in TTCB 50 overs tourney

Out-of-favour West Indies opening batsman Evin Lewis scored a match-winning knock of 119 on Sunday, as he helped his Bess Motors Marchin Patriots team to a three-wicket win versus QPCC in the TT Cricket Board (TTCB) Premiership I 50-over competition.

Batting first in Charlieville, QPCC made a competitive score of 285 for eight, with Jordan Warner cracking 120 and West Indies and Trinbago Knight Riders standout Akeal Hosein making 57.

QPCC went into the fourth round of matches on the back of three consecutive wins, but Lewis and the Patriots put an end to the Parkites’ run as they got to the total with 19 balls to spare.

The aggressive left-hander struck nine fours and nine sixes in his 97-ball innings and he featured in two major partnerships. Lewis shared in an 88-run stand for the second wicket with Chryston Thurton (55), while he put on 135 runs for the third wicket with Ritchie Looknauth (46) as the Patriots took control of the contest.

The Patriots wobbled after the fall of Lewis’ wicket in the 35th over, but they got over the line to get their third win of the tourney.

QPCC’s loss was arguably Central Sports’ gain, as the 2024 League champions got their fourth straight win when they got a massive seven-wicket victory against Preysal at Inshan Ali Park after dismissing the opposition for just 115 in 30.4 overs.

Ex-West Indies youth player Joshua James hits fifty in Bago T10 Blast

FORMER West Indies under-19 Cricket World Cup player Joshua James sparkled at the 2024 Dream 11 Bago T10 Blast at the Shaw Park Recreational Ground in Scarborough on Thursday, as he smashed an unbeaten half-century in a convincing win for the Store Bay Snorkelers.

Playing their fourth game of the competition, the Snorkelers got their third win to go level on nine points with Pirate’s Bay Raiders, Mt Irvine Surfers and defending champions No Man’s Land Explorers in a battle for the crucial top three spots as they hammered the Pigeon Point Skiers by ten wickets.

Batting first, Pigeon Point were reduced to 88 for nine from their ten overs, with opening batsman Mbeki Joseph top-scoring with 26 off 14 balls.

Strapping Snorkelers spinner Anthony Providence was the pick of the bowlers as he grabbed impressive figures of four for 20 and reduced the big-hitting from the Pigeon Point team in the latter overs.

With a persistent drizzle threatening to disrupt play at the Shaw Park facility, James and his opening partner Daniel Williams were in a destructive mood as they raced to 90 without loss at the end of the fifth over to grant their team victory with 30 balls to spare.

James was especially brutal against the Pigeon Point bowlers, and he hit a brutal 53 off just 17 balls to dominate the partnership with Williams. The West Indies Academy allrounder hit six fours and four sixes in his knock, while Williams offered solid support with 24 off 13 balls with two fours and two sixes.

In Thursday’s second encounter, No Man’s Land got their second win in as many days as they search for consistency in their title defence.

Mt Irvine batted first against No Man’s Land and made a respectable score of 109 for five in their ten overs, with Kirstan Kallicharan leading the way with a polished innings of 49 from 26 balls. Selvin Duncan also chipped in nicely for Mt Irvine with 24 off 12 balls.

No Man’s Land were able to chase down the 110-run target with three balls to spare and for the loss of just three wickets. Man-of-the-Match Leron Lezama led the way with an unbeaten 55 off 32 balls, and the left-hander struck five fours and three sixes in his knock.

Former Windies under-19 player Anderson Mahase backed up his match-winning performance from the previous day by hitting ten off just two balls to steer his team over the victory line in the final over.

Mohan (115), Jangoo (106) make South toil in ‘Classic’

Centuries from skipper Vikash Mohan (115) and wicketkeeper/batsman Amir Jangoo (106 not out) put North in control on day two of the North/South Classic at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, on Friday.

North concluded the day’s play on 271/3 after 90 overs, trailing South’s opening day score of 274 by three runs, ahead of the final day’s play, set to bowl off at 9am on Saturday.

North still have a lot of batting to come with the likes of Leonardo Julien, Dejourn Charles, Andrew Rambaran and Sion Hackett in the line-up.

The defending champions started fresh on the second day after dismissing South in the final over of Thursday. However, North lost opener Camillo Carimbocas (16) with 30 runs on the board and then new batsman Isaiah Rajah (12) to fall to 61/2 in under 19 overs.

But when Jangoo met opening captain Mohan in the middle, the pair made the Imran Khan-captained South team toil in the sun.

The duo constructed a strong 180-run partnership, which propelled them to 241.

Mohan achieved his highest first class score of 115 runs off 222 balls, cracking ten fours. Khan targeted the duo with spin but Bryan Charles, Jason Mohammed and Khan himself could not break the bond.

Mohan’s stellar knock came to an end as he was caught by Daniel Williams off Damion Jaochim’s spin.

Mohan had had his handprint all over the match as he had a four-wicket haul on Thursday.

Jangoo, who played the supporting role to Mohan, became the aggressor when he was joined by Tion Webster.

Jangoo almost gave away his wicket twice while on 99 runs as Khan missed a caught-and-bowled chance and Cephas Cooper was later inches from having him run out. Webster helped calm his partner and Jangoo soon reached a well-deserved century from 218 balls.

At stumps, Jangoo enters day three on 106 not out (13 fours, one six) while Webster is on 15 not out.

The three North wickets that fell came courtesy Shaaron Lewis (1/21), Joachim (1/62) and Charles (1/69).

Vikash Mohan spins North back into Classic vs South

A FOUR-WICKET haul in the final session by North off-spinner Vikash Mohan led to a South batting collapse on day one of the North/South Cricket Classic at the National Cricket Centre, Couva on Thursday.

South were in a commanding position at the tea break with just three wickets down and almost 200 runs on the board. After tea, South progressed to 222/3 before Mohan took over.

Experienced Jason Mohammed missed out on a century as he was caught by Dejourn Charles to give Mohan his first wicket. Mohammed struck 91 off 132 balls with ten fours and one six.

Wickets started to tumble as Daniel Williams (five), Imran Khan (five) and Damion Joachim (duck) all fell cheaply as pacer Philton Williams, left-arm spinner Khary Pierre and Mohan grabbed one wicket apiece.

Mohan took two of the last three wickets as South were all out for 274. Jyd Goolie, batting at position five, was left stranded on 60 not out off 86 balls. Earlier in the innings, opener Cephas Cooper was dismissed for 80 as a mix-up with Mohammed meant the former was run out. Cooper wanted a quick single, but had to turn around when he was in the middle of the wicket and could not get back to his crease in time. He struck nine fours and two sixes in his 149-ball knock.

Mohan ended with figures of 4/56 in 21 overs, Pierre bagged 3/81 in 27 overs and Williams picked up 2/50 in 13 overs. The TT Red Force players are using the North/South Classic as preparation for the West Indies Four-Day Championships, which bowls off in early February.

Coach of the Red Force David Furlonge is satisfied with the build-up. Yesterday, he told Newsday, “Preparations have been going good, but we need to increase our work load to get the fellas ready. Four days is a long game, sometimes you have to be in the field a day and a half. Physically, mentally we have to get the fellas ready.”

The North-South Classic is the final match before the Red Force team is announced.

“We hoping to have the team selected by Monday and then have a four-day practice match the 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th (of January).”

Furlonge said a smaller group competed in trials this year because the coaching staff wanted to give specific players more attention.

“This year we concentrated on a core group of players and not having 30, 35 players at practice…You could afford to give batsmen longer knocks, you could get your bowlers bowling longer spells. You have fellas making more use of their practice time.”

Day two of the North/South Classic bowls off at 10 am today.

Kjorn Ottley cracks 101 not out in Red Force trial

KJORN Ottley struck a quick-fire century on the opening day of a three-day TT Red Force trial match at Inshan Ali Park, Preysal on Thursday.

Ottley was 101 not out off 91 balls as the Imran Khan XI closed on 143/1, trailing the Vikash Mohan XI by 45 runs. Ottley batted with intent as he struck nine fours and six sixes.

Ottley and Cephas Cooper added 143 for the first wicket. When Cooper fell for 40 off 90 deliveries, play ended for the day.

Batting first, the Mohan XI struggled at the crease and were dismissed for 188 as only Kamil Pooran and Daniel Williams showed resistance. Opener Pooran belted 12 fours and two sixes in his innings of 83 off 90 balls and wicket-keeper Williams made 55 off 46 balls. Almost all the runs Williams scored was in boundaries as he struck 12 fours.

Four bowlers grabbed two wickets each for the Khan XI. Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre and left-arm pacer Shaaron Lewis both grabbed 2/31, right-arm pacer Terrance Hinds bagged 2/34 and right-arm fast bowler Anderson Phillip picked up 2/37.

Day two of the trial match bowls off at 10 am on Friday.
