Hurricane Elsa now tropical storm

Hurricane Elsa fell back to a tropical storm on Saturday, with conditions deteriorating in Hispaniola.

A public advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) at 2 pm on Saturday said a hurricane warning was in effect for the southern portion of Haiti from Port Au Prince to the south border with the Dominican Republic.

As of 2 pm on Saturday, Elsa was moving toward the west-northwest near 29 mph (46 km/h), NHC said.

By Monday, Elsa is expected to move across central and western Cuba and head toward Florida. Elsa is forecast to move near or over parts of the west coast of Florida on Tuesday.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for the coast north of Port Au Prince, the the southern coast of Dominican Republic, some Cuban provinces like Camaguey and Holguin, and Jamaica.

The centre said there was a hurricane watch is in effect for Cuban provinces like Camaguey, Granma, Guantanamo, Holguin, and Santiago de Cuba.

On Friday at 8.30 am, Tropical Storm Elsa upgraded to a category 1 hurricane. It weakened back to the tropical storm on Saturday midmorning.

Its passage on Friday across the Windward Islands resulted in power outages, flooding, fallen trees and damaged homes in St Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados.

It was the first hurricane to hit Barbados in more than 60 years.

On Saturday morning, the Met Office in Trinidad and Tobago said the adverse weather alert and localised flood alert had been discontinued.

"Though lingering showers are still expected, the threat of significant, impactful weather has substantially decreased," a Facebook post said.

"The threat of further localised flooding has also decreased. The levels of major river courses are high, however they are expected to decrease through the day."

Although the then hurricane did not pose a direct threat to the country, TT was under a yellow-level adverse weather warning on Friday.
