[UPDATED] Former AG Anand Ramlogan arrested, warrant issued for Gerald Ramdeen

Former attorney general Anand Ramlogan was arrested at the Piarco Airport early this morning as he was about to leave the country to pursue legal matters, and a warrant has been issued for the arrest of attorney and United National Congress senator Gerald Ramdeen.

Arrest warrants were obtained by officers of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

Newsday understands Ramdeen is expected to turn himself into Anti-Corruption Bureau police this morning.

This comes one day after Ramlogan appeared in the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court in the ongoing preliminary inquiry into charges laid in 2017 for allegedly perverting the course of public justice and misbehaviour in public office.

In that matter, the charges were laid after attorney David West reported to police that before he (West) was appointed director of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA), he was telephoned by Ramlogan and asked to withdraw a witness statement relating to the failed extradition involving Section 34 applicants Steve Ferguson and Ishwar Galbaransingh. West said he was told by Ramlogan that he would be selected for the job of PCA director if he did so.

Update: Attorney Wayne Sturge, who is representing Ramdeen, confirmed his client voluntarily turned himself in to the police at about 7.00 this morning.  They are now being questioned in connection to payment of legal fees  while Ramlogan was Attorney General.
