10 Caroni households get disaster relief grants

THE Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services (MPSDFS) on December 16 handed out ten disaster relief grants to assist families affected by recent adverse weather conditions.

A news release from the ministry on December 17, said the grant distribution was part of its ongoing nationwide disaster relief efforts to support households as they work to recover and restore stability.

Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services Vandana Mohit addressed beneficiaries and stakeholders at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, she said it was the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that families feel supported during times of disruption and uncertainty.

“When disaster strikes, families are left managing loss while trying to regain a sense of normalcy. Our role is to respond with care, timeliness and compassion, and to ensure that people are supported as they begin the process of recovery,” Mohit said.

Disaster relief grants were given to ten Caroni households, with a total of 21 members.

The total value of assistance distributed is $67,500.

The grants are to be used to replace lost or damaged essential household items items.

Mayor of Chaguanas Faaiq Mohammed also addressed the gathering and praised the continued collaboration between the ministry and the corporation in supporting residents affected by adverse weather conditions.

The release said the ministry serves as a second responder during times of disaster, providing support to families once the immediate danger has passed.

“In addition to household grants, eligible families may access temporary food support, rental assistance, home repair materials and psychosocial services, recognising that recovery involves both physical and emotional wellbeing.”

It said as disaster relief distributions continue across TT, “the ministry remains focused on placing people at the centre of its response and ensuring that families affected by disaster are supported as they rebuild and move forward.”
