Off-duty cop chopped during robbery in Sangre Grande

AN off-duty police officer was chopped to the face and head during an attempted robbery in Sangre Grande on December 12.

The suspect was arrested shortly after in blood-stained clothing and remains in custody.

The officer was discharged from hospital on December 13, police said.

Around 9.30 pm on December 12, the officer who is attached to Sangre Grande CID, returned to the Sangre Grande Police Station, shortly after ending his shift with chop wounds to his face, the top of his head, right shoulder and hand.

Police said around 9 pm, the officer was driving to his home in the Coalmine area when he was stopped by the suspect, whom he knew, and agreed to take him to Melajo Trace, Vega De Oropouche, Sangre Grande.

The officer said he was attacked by the suspect with a Chinese chopper during an attempted robbery.

During a struggle, the officer managed to escape and drove to the Sangre Grande Police Station. He was taken to the Sangre Grande Hospital for treatment by his colleagues.

The suspect was arrested shortly after at Cunapo Southern Main Road, Coalmine, Sangre Grande. He was also taken to the hospital for treatment and later released into the custody of the police.
