Trinidad and Tobago cricketers shine in Peru

THE Trinidad and Tobago women’s and men’s teams were flawless on the opening day of the T20 cricket tournament at the 2025 Bolivarian Games in Lima, Peru, on December 4.

Spinners Anisa Mohammed and Damion Joachim both grabbed four-wicket hauls on the day.

Facing Jamaica in their early match, the TT women won comfortably by seven wickets.

Off-spinner Mohammed ended with figures of 4/12 in four overs to limit Jamaica to 77/6 in their 20 overs. Mohammed, who is in the twilight of her career, was ably supported by rising star Samara Ramnath, who took 2/14 in her four overs.

Batting for Jamaica, West Indies batter Rashada Williams struck 47 not out but struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking as she faced 61 deliveries. She only struck three fours.

The entire Jamaica team could not find the fence as four fours were struck in total.

In response, TT scored 78/3 in 16 overs with Lee Ann Kirby and Djenaba Joseph scoring 14 runs each.

Later in the day, TT steamrolled Barbados by 108 runs.

TT posted a healthy 146/3 in 20 overs with opener Shunelle Sawh leading the way with 46 off 45 balls with two fours and one six.

Sawh got assistance from Britney Cooper (25 not out), Shania Abdool (23), Joseph (22) and Kirby (13 not out). Sabriel Headley was the only bowler to grab wickets for Barbados, ending with 2/29 in four overs.

Barbados could only manage 38/9 in 20 overs as no batter got into double figures. Spinner Karishma Ramharack bagged 3/3 in four overs.

In the men’s tournament, home team Peru were no match for TT as the latter won by nine wickets.

Peru limped to 62/8 in 20 overs as only two batsmen reached double figures. Pravin Hemant Shamdasani hit 15.

Spinner Joachim was unplayable with figures of 4/3 in four overs, which included two maidens. Jesse Bootan was also among the wickets with 2/10 in two overs.

Opener Kamil Pooran belted 54 not out off just 19 balls as TT stormed to 63/1 in 5.3 overs. Pooran hit four fours and five sixes.

The TT men made it two wins in as many matches with a victory over Jamaica.

Jamaica scored 133/8 batting first with TT pacer Shaaron Lewis taking 3/13 in four overs.

In reply, TT wrapped up the win by scoring 135/4 in 16.3 overs. Leonardo Julien led the chase with 60 not out off 41 deliveries as TT won by six wickets.

The tournament continues on December 5.

TT, Jamaica and Barbados are playing in the women’s tournament and the teams featuring in the men’s tournament are TT, Barbados, Jamaica and Peru.
