Exacomm’s free workshop equips youth with communication skills

In a move geared towards youth empowerment and lifelong learning, Exacomm, a communications, marketing and advertising firm, recently hosted a free one-day communication skills workshop for youths aged 14-20.

It was held in-person on August 26, when a dynamic group of 35 youths from 15 schools across the nation gathered at the Roopnarine Grand Marquis Conference Centre in Charlieville, Chaguanas.

The workshop was organised by Kerin Rampersad, founder of Exacomm and a communications specialist.

The initiative aligned with the UN Development Programme’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those promoting quality education and economic growth.

Rampersad emphasised that effective communication empowers young people to lead, innovate, and inspire change.

Students ranging from form one to university undergraduate levels participated in a series of practical exercises modelled after a “professional conference experience”.

The programme focused on four key modules: mastering everyday communication, communicating with confidence, working in teams and managing tough conversations.

“The sessions were carefully developed to equip participants with life skills that will support them as they navigate school, prepare for their first job, or step into future leadership roles,” she told Newsday.

Rampersad explained that the initiative was also inspired by the challenges posed by the pandemic and the digital age, which have limited opportunities for young people to develop strong interpersonal and communication skills.

“The repercussions are evident in reduced confidence and challenges in expressing ideas clearly,” she said.

Rampersad viewed the workshop as the first of many, adding that it is her way of giving back and inspiring the next generation.

“Communication is a passion of mine, and I wanted to provide a space, free of charge, where students could develop essential life skills. I am truly grateful to my network of supporters who helped make this possible.”

Rampersad said parents have already praised the workshop’s positive impact, with one sharing that it gave her form two daughter “a real boost.”

The event also featured a virtual address by Mayaro MP Nicholas Morris, who encouraged participants to engage in local youth councils and volunteer programmes.

Morris highlighted the importance of communication skills in accessing regional and international youth opportunities, particularly through platforms like the UN.

Via Zoom, he urged students to value their voices, develop their skills, and prepare for leadership roles.
