The Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) Premier I 50-over tournament, which was scheduled to bowl off with first round matches this weekend, has been cancelled owing to the start of the wet season.

Additionally, the Premier II north and south 50-over competitions, which had two rounds played and a third round that washed out last weekend owing to rain, were also cancelled for the 2025 season.

This was confirmed by Premier League committee chairman Henry Chase on May 21.

“We asked the clubs, and most of the clubs were in agreement (to cancel), so we didn’t just make that decision on our own. We (sent) a WhatsApp chat for the clubs to vote on it, and the majority voted to cancel it,” Chase said.

“So we made this decision to cancel the 50-over tournament after consultation with the clubs, and seeking their consensus on it.”

After a weekend (May 17-19) of heavy rain, the TT Meteorological Office confirmed the transition into the wet season on May 19.

“This weekend, rain is projected again so we have to protect the integrity of the competition and not have supporters and clubs come to venues to be turned back because of rain,” Chase added.

Usually, the domestic 50-over tournament is used by TTCB selectors to pick the TT Red Force team for the Regional Super50 Cup later down in the year.

In this regard, Chase said it was proposed, but not confirmed, that a four-team tournament be held before the regional competition kicks off in September/October, to allow national selectors a chance to select the team.

Performances at the domestic T20 Festival and National League Premier I (two/three-day) tournaments, which have already been completed, may also come into consideration for team selection, but this is also yet to be agreed on.
