Special Olympics National Games runs off on May 10

THE 2025 Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago (SOTT) National Games gets under way at Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella on May 10 from 8.30 am.

This year’s theme is Uniting the Nation. From May 10 to June 14, nine schools and teams will compete in eight sports, showcasing their talents and determination of athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Competing schools are Happy Haven, Immortelle Centre, Independents, Lady Hochoy Home North, Lady Hochoy Home Gasparillo, Lady Hochoy School Gasparillo, Lady Hochoy School Penal, Memisa Centre and the National Centre for Persons with Disabilities.

Sporting disciplines being contested are bocce, volleyball, equestrian, athletics, powerlifting, basketball, aquatics and football.

The event also features remarks from SOTT board chairman Major David Benjamin, greetings from local dignitaries, and the athlete oath delivered by Cadel Cuffie, boys 200m Special Olympics division record holder at Carifta.

Additionally, the torch handover at the games symbolises unity and perseverance at the heart of the Special Olympics movement.

A SOTT statement said, “Looking ahead, SOTT will continue its commitment to year-round sporting opportunities with the National Beach Games on October 25 at Maracas Beach, and the National Floorball Games on November 22 at the Southern Regional Indoor Sport Arena in Pleasantville.
