The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) says a huge swathe of the country will be affected by a shutdown at the Caroni Water Treatment Plant between August 9 and 11.

In a media release issued on July 31, WASA said customers in parts of north and south Trinidad will see their their water supply interrupted while “critical electrical maintenance work” is done at the plant, as well as ancillary work on the Caroni North and South transmission pipeline network.

WASA said it believes the work will minimise future downtime, extend the lifespan of critical equipment and enhance safety protocols.

It said mitigation measures will be taken to address the effect of the shutdown on customers.

The measures include redistributing supply from other water treatment facilities; increased water trucking; and special emphasis and arrangements to supply health institutions, homes for theaged and other special needs organisations.

It said the supply to affected areas is expected to be restored over a 24-48-hour period, in accordance with established supply schedules.

WASA advised customers to manage their water use efficiently and to store water during the shutdown.

It added a limited truckborne supply is available and can be requested through WASA’s mobile app or the customer portal on its website.

Customers can also call WASA’s toll-free customer call centre at 800-4420/26.
