MSJ praises Emancipation Support Committee's reparations work
MOVEMENT for Social Justice (MSJ) political leader David Abdulah has praised the efforts of the Emancipation Support Committee (ESC) to continue conversations among the population about reparations for the descendants of African slaves.
He did this in his African Emancipation Day message to the nation.
In June, panellists at the ESC's Kwame Ture Memorial Lecture Series agreed the conversation on reparations for slavery ought not to start at slavery itself but to the culture, lifestyle and level of development the African diaspora experienced before it was dismantled by the transatlantic slave trade.
Abdulah praised the ESC for its selfless and tireless efforts and struggle to create a powerful set of activities that enable tens of thousands of citizens to make a real connection with and celebrate Emancipation, their history and heritage.
"We commend the newly re-established National Reparations Committee for the work that it is doing."
Abdulah said the MSJ continues to do what it can to educate people on the issue of reparations.
He added that another aspect of African Emancipation Day is the continuation of the struggle today against remnants of the colonial power structure which keeps a small elite in positions of great wealth and perpetuates the inequality and discrimination that for the majority of citizens of African descent.
Abdulah said, "That struggle is for social justice for all."
