Swimmer Aimee Le Blanc bags two wins at Short Course Champs

Aimee Le Blanc splashed to two victories on the opening night of the National Age Group Short Course Championships, which swam off at the Aquatic Centre in Balmain, Couva, on July 10.

The Marlins swimmer was golden in the 13-14 girls’ 200m breaststroke and 400m freestyle events on the opening day.

In the former, she touched the wall in two minutes and 59.14 seconds (2.59.14), beating to the line eventual runner-up of Blue Lightning Sapphire Wong Chong Achee (3.01.31) and bronze winner of Tiger Sharks Karissa Persad (3.19.15).

Later on, Le Blanc proved a cut above the rest when she clocked 4.42.96 in the 400m free. She finished over 25 seconds ahead of silver medallist Netania Edwards (5.10.24) and third-placed Keimayah Rouse (5.26.20) of Point Fortin Aqua Darts.

In the feature event, Marlins’ Liam Carrington won gold in the 15-17 boys’ 400m freestyle in 3.58.27. Club-mate Zachary Anthony took second in 4.06.58 and Point Fortin’s Darren Belfon completed the top three respectively, in 4.15.69.

RWB Aquatics’ Kyle Leera topped the field in the 11-12 boys 400m free in 4.57.51, followed by Tidal Wave’s Aiden Nixon (5.18.77) and RWB’s Chad Baboolal (5.24.25) in that order.

Another Marlins swimmer, Zara Persico, who shattered a 29-year old record at the National Open Long Course Champions in May, swam to the top of the podium in the 11-12 girls’ 400m free.

She stopped the timer on 4.44.81. Taking second was her club-mate Marena Martinez in 4.49.67,and Leah De Freitas completed a Marlins sweep by holding on to third. She clocked 5.52.62.

Additionally, Nikoli Blackman (Marlins) advanced to the boys’ 18 & over 50m butterfly final after finishing fastest among the qualifiers, in 23.96s. Also progressing were Tidal Wave’s Johann-Matthew Matamoro (24.68s) and Dorado Swim Club’s Delroy Tyrell (25.89s).

Atlantis’ Riquelio Joseph (26.00s), Tidal Wave’s Stachys Harley (26.11s), Marlins’ Aaron Stuart (26.30s), Flying Fish’s Josiah Changar (26.51s) and Tidal Wave’s Nicholas Keith (26.71s) also advanced to the final.
