Basketball Fiesta tips off in Couva

SINCE its inception in 2017, Basketball Fiesta has provided a platform for young athletes across Trinidad and Tobago to engage in high-level competition.

"Basketball Fiesta 2024 promises to be a landmark event, fostering youth development, regional collaboration and the pursuit of international basketball excellence," according to a media release by the organisers.

Basketball Fiesta will be held from July 12-14 at the National Cycling Velodrome in Balmain, Couva. Action begins at 9 am on July 12.

Founded by Garvin Warwick, former president of the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT), the tournament addresses the need for structured, competitive opportunities for youth basketball players.

Initially, the tournament featured nine clubs with 24 teams. This year has expanded to 16 clubs with 48 teams, reflecting its growing popularity and importance. Before Basketball Fiesta, many clubs relied on players from Secondary school basketball systems, with limited opportunities for younger age groups. Now, the tournament provides a fixed calendar event for Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 players for both boys and girls, promoting continuous development at all levels.

For Trinidad and Tobago, and the wider Caribbean, participating in Basketball Fiesta is more than just about local competition. It serves as a stepping stone towards qualifying for the FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup. To achieve this, nations must compete successfully at national and regional levels, starting with Under-15 competitions.

Entering its sixth official year, Basketball Fiesta continues to uphold international standards, gaining recognition beyond Trinidad and Tobago. This growth is supported by investments from both the private and public sectors. Republic Bank, through its Power to Make a Difference (PMAD) programme remains a key sponsor, along with support from the Ministry of Sport and Community Development and the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago. Other notable sponsors include bmobile, PWC, Domino's Pizza, Pita Pit, Tailwind Ltd, Next Level Performance and National Lotteries Control Board.
