KENT "Panther" Castillo, who was shot dead on the night of June 9 while playing cards, is not believed to have been his killers' intended target.

The 44-year-old, from Mungal Trace, Orange Field Road in Carapichaima, died on the spot.

Castillo was the son of retired Snr Supt Edward Castillo, 60, who was shot dead at his mini mart at Waterloo Road, Carapichaima, in November 2018.

In the latest incident, the police said Castillo and a group of people were playing cards at a house near his home at around 10.10 pm when three gunmen ambushed and shot them. The killers, who had high-powered guns, walked along Lions Drive, and then crossed a ravine.

People started running for cover and after the shooting stopped, others found Castillo's body on the ground at the back of the house.

Four other men, 27, 28, 36 and 41, were hit, but survived. They were taken to the hospital and three were later discharged.

The 27-year-old suffered spinal injuries and underwent surgery at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope. He was expected to have more surgery.

At the house where the shooting took place, homeowner Alicia Lawrence said it had nothing to do with anyone who lives in the house.

She added that one of her sons was among the wounded.

Lawrence recalled she was in her room when she heard the shots. She showed several bullet holes in the aftermath.

Central Division and Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region III, police visited the scene and gathered evidence.

The shooting is believed to have stemmed from an altercation over a woman at another house in the area earlier in the day. A man who had defended himself in that argument was visiting the house.

It is believed the killers knew where he was.

This person escaped uninjured, and investigators were still gathering evidence to link the shooting and the altercation.

Residents told Newsday Castillo was not originally from Carapichaima, but had a relationship with a woman there.

No one was at the house and when Newsday visited a close relative's home in Chase Village, no one came out.

In 2018, Castillo's father was at his mini mart when two men posing as customers ordered drinks. As he was getting them, one of the men shot him. A female relative who was nearby was shot and wounded.

The men then got into a car and drove off.

Investigations are ongoing.
