ASJA Girls’ College: We did not enter student for Chutney Soca competition

ASJA Girls’ College in Tunapuna has distanced itself from one of its students who participated in a Carnival event.

On February 8, at the Schools’ Intellectual National Carnival Chutney Soca competition at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain, form two student Isabella Williams placed third in the secondary school category.

On Monday, a statement from the schools's principal was posted on ASJA's official Facebook page. It read, "Please be advised that as an ASJA school, we did not enter this student in this competition, nor did we attend or organise for any of our students to attend this competition.

“This student has been personally involved with singing since primary school and it was her parents’ personal decision to enter her in this competition.”

The statement said the school recognised that the school's name was used since it was a national school competition and that information would have been requested from her parents by the organisers.

“However, the school was in no way involved with this event. That being said, we recognise that this student is a very disciplined and focused young lady who has never knowingly brought our school into disrepute,” the statement said.

“We will continue to advise our parents on our stance on these matters.”

Marcus Mc Donald of Presentation College in San Fernando won the competition with his song Fusion while second place went to Zkinga Moses of Queen’s Royal College.

Calls to the ASJA's secretary general Haji Rahimool Hosein for further comment went unanswered on Monday.
