[UPDATED] Game wardens rescue albino Burmese python in Las Lomas

Game wardens rescued an albino Burmese python in the Las Lomas area on February 10.

Conservator of Forests and Chief Game Warden, Denny Dipchansingh told Newsday the snake was found in an old freezer after a member of the public reported suspicious activity in the area.

He said people are being questioned and a charge under the Conservation of Wildlife Act is imminent. The charge carries a penalty of $5,000 or three months imprisonment for keeping a protected animal.

In a statement, Agriculture Minister Kazim Hosein expressed his disappointment about the discovery saying it can be damaging to the country's ecosystem.

"The presence of such an invasive species poses a significant threat to our local ecosystem and biodiversity. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with the illegal trade and possession of exotic animals. Burmese pythons, in particular, are notorious for their ability to disrupt native wildlife populations and upset delicate ecological balances."

Dipchansingh said the species of snake is not endemic to TT and can harbour pests and diseases that can affect local wildlife populations.

In light of the discovery, Hosein urged the public to report instances of illegal animals to the authorities.

"As Minister of Agriculture, Land, and Fisheries, I urge the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings or suspicions of illegal animal activity. Additionally, I applaud the efforts of our game wardens and the praedial larceny squad and reaffirm our ministry's unwavering commitment to combating illegal wildlife trafficking and safeguarding our environment."
