TOBAGO’S farming population appears to be declining, according to statistics presented by an official of the THA Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development.

Tamika Seales-Mansano, director of food crop production, was one of four division officials who appeared virtually on Wednesday before the JSC on Local Authorities, Service Commissions and Statutory Authorities, including the THA.

The JSC is chaired by independent senator Sunity Maharaj.

During the meeting, JSC member Lisa Morris-Julian asked about the number of farmers in Tobago.

Seales-Mansano revealed there were 4,037 registered farmers on the island.

“Out of that 4,037 we recognise that not all will be active farmers. So we have 343 active out of our last survey,” she told members.

Maharaj noted the significant disparity between the number of registered farmers and those who were actually active. She wondered if the covid19 pandemic or other factors had contributed to the decline.

“Do you see a steep fall at any particular point in time?” Maharaj asked Seales-Mansano.
