POLICE are investigating the death of Hameed Jack, who was gunned down near the Bon Air Recreational Grounds at around 8.30 am on Thursday.

Jack had a contract to clean walls and railings on Emperor Boulevard near the Recreational Grounds.

He was working when reports say a brown Nissan X-trail pulled up alongside him and the occupants began shooting. Jack collapsed on the spot and died.

Police found 11 spent shells.

Jack, 31, is said to have moved to the area from Duncan Street, Port of Spain.

His family remained tight-lipped on the possible motive for his shooting, but police sources say he was known to them.

MP for the area Camille Robinson-Regis told Newsday the brazen daylight shooting and Jack’s death were “very distressing.”

“This was a young man who was trying his best to be on the right path. He had just got employment through our efforts. And so it's something that was unexpected.

“It's a sad situation because he was young and trying his best. We're hoping that there will be no more incidents of this nature…We've had quite a number of young people who are doing very well in this constituency. Unfortunately, this has happened and it is really sad,”

Emperor Boulevard, where Jack was shot, is a main thoroughfare in the Bon Air Gardens community.

Newsday saw no police CCTV cameras nearby, despite a primary school, an outdoor mall and the Priority Bus Route being metres away.

Police officers there were overheard discussing the difficulty in obtaining CCTV camera footage in the area.

Asked if anything was being done to remedy the problem, Robinson-Regis said the authorities are aware of the issue.

“You would know that that is not the MP's responsibility. We have spoken with the police, and I'm sure the police will act.”

Robinson-Regis said she believes the government and the police service are both doing their part in the fight against crime.

This is the third murder and fourth shooting in the area in less than a month, after two teenagers were shot dead several streets away.

On November 14, Olun Jones, 18, and Anim Persad, 15, were shot in front of a neighbourhood parlour.

Police say they found 57 spent shells, the majority from high-calibre automatic rifles.

The next morning a man was shot and chopped while leaving for work. That victim’s life was spared only because a neighbour fired several shots into the air from his licensed gun, and the attackers fled.
