Coat of paint can save many lives

THE EDITOR: Commuting recently from Fyzabad to San Fernando, as I approached the Gulf City traffic lights, which were on red at the time, I had this sudden urge for coffee (and possibly a slice of banana bread), and seeing a popular outlet to my right, I decided to enter into the filter lane to make a right turn on the green light – a decision that almost cost me my life!

Needless to say, whilst I am familiar with the area, as one approaches the lights, the painted white lines demarcating the respective lanes are so poorly visible I almost found myself face to face with oncoming traffic from the opposite end, with some of those drivers going at high speeds.

The once-gleaming white lines drawn at this bustling junction are now poorly maintained due to ad-hoc attempts at road repaving or just plain dereliction of duty by those responsible for upkeep.

This startling experience occurred mere minutes before 6 pm, when daylight was just fading away, and I shudder to think of unsuspecting commuters caught up in this deadly predicament in the dark of night. For them the outcome can be: in the
dead of night.

I implore the authorities, please, before any major collisions or deaths occur at this busy intersection, quickly correct this dangerous oversight as a matter of urgency! A fresh coat of white paint could save so many lives.
