Although the decomposing bodies found over the weekend in Penal remained unidentified up to Monday afternoon, police investigators believe they might have been Venezuelans.

On Sunday, hunters came upon the bodies of a man and woman in a forested area off Moolchan Trace Extension, off the Penal Rock Road, and alerted the police.

Police said the two might have been there for days or weeks, judging from the state of the bodies.

The police found several documents, including “cedulas de identidad” (Venezuelan identity cards), bearing the names Jonathan Antonio Sanchez Lepage, 27, and Carmen Amarilys Sanchez, 36, both from Tucupita, in the Delta Amacuro State.

The police also found documents like the tarjeta de vacunacion (vaccination card) and carnet de la patria (country card).

Autopsies are expected to determine the causes of death.

Newsday confirmed that no one reported the two people missing to the South Western Division police. However, Newsday learnt that the two were renting an apartment along Penal Rock Road but moved out about two or three weeks ago.

The whereabouts of Lepage and Sanchez remained unknown.

Penal and Homicide Bureau Region III police are investigating.

Anyone with information on their identities or the circumstances of their deaths can call the Penal police station at 647-8888 or the nearest police station.
