A father of five from Point Fortin was shot dead on Monday, the same day he turned 32, and one of his bereaved brothers lamented that crime was out of control in the country.

Azad “Allan” Ali as well as another resident, Keith “Pam Pam” Roberts, 44, were killed on Monday night by a gunman who ambushed them at Warden Road near Spring Trace. Another resident, Anthony “Mario” Bermudez, 42, was wounded and in critical condition at the hospital.

Speaking at Ali’s home on Tuesday, his brother Yasseem Ali, 34, of Chaguanas, said the children would grow up not knowing their father. He added that Ali’s common-law wife is expecting their sixth child in November.

“They are fatherless now. They loved their father. His oldest child is about seven. This is a sad situation, and crime is out of hand,” Yasseem said as he wept.

“I did not get a chance to call him yesterday for his birthday. Normally, we would lime for his birthday. Crime is overbearing. It is happening every day, every minute, and what is the Government doing about it? They are giving murderers bail. Why?”

He said Ali, who also hustled and worked as a PH driver, was the last of four siblings.

About two years ago, their brother, Mustafa Ali, died from natural causes.

Roberts worked as a labourer and lived at Spring Trace, while Ali lived at E Street Extension.

No one was at Roberts’ home when Newsday visited on Tuesday, and relatives of Bermudez at Warden Road declined to comment.

Gunshots rang out at around 9.15 pm on Monday at Warden Road.

Residents called the police, and first responders W/Cpl Gordon, WPC Williams, and PC John, who were on mobile patrol, went to the scene.

They found Ali slumped in the driver’s seat of his Ford Laser car and Roberts nearby on the roadway. Both died on the spot.

Point Fortin municipal police, including PC Ishmael and WPCs Ramona and Ferguson, also responded and took Bermudez to the Point Fortin Hospital.

The police learned that minutes earlier, Ali had stopped to drop off Roberts to buy an item from someone nearby. He remained in the car while Bermudez was in the back seat as they waited for Roberts to return.

Roberts walked back to the car, and as he was about to re-enter the front seat, a gunman walking along the road opened fire, hitting the three men.

South Western Division police, including ASP Mathura, Insp Corrie, W/Ag Insp Taitt, Sgt Rollocks, and Cpl Victor, as well as the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (Region III) police, visited the scene and gathered evidence.

The police recovered 27 rounds of 9mm spent shells.

No one has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.

PC Mathura is leading investigations.
