Let's commit today to make our country a paradise again

THE EDITOR: The Cambridge English Dictionary defines independence as "freedom from being governed or ruled by another; the ability to live your life without being helped or influenced by other people." This is a great responsibility.

On August 31, 1962, TT achieved its independence from Great Britain. Since then we have seen growth in many areas. However, at this juncture in our history we need to do some serious rebuilding. The three years of the pandemic did major damage economically, socially and, for some of us, even mentally. We continue to live in tough times with many social ills to deal with.

But together we can "find our way back." We can make our country a paradise in the sun once again, and a place where people dream of visiting. It is not too late. People of TT, it is not impossible for us to rise again but it will take the right attitude and deep passion for this to be achieved.

In everything, leadership plays a vital role, so in rebuilding TT we need all on board, including our youths. There is no room for fighting one another, but it is important to have meaningful dialogue about the problems affecting the country, and work together to find solutions.

I am convinced that the challenges we are facing will be overcome, but we must unite as a people for herein lies the key to change. We are not short on ideas or know-how, but we need to come together as one.

This Independence Day, let us commit afresh to making TT once more a place that we can brag about, encouraging the world to visit our shores.

Do enjoy your Independence Day, remembering that it is up to all of us to make TT a better place in which to live. We must lay the foundation for future generations. Rebuilding is not always easy, but it is what is required at this moment. Let’s do it together.
