Wilson takes ICWI table tennis open singles

Aaron Wilson won the first ever open singles event of the 2023 ICWI Table Tennis Champions League on Saturday at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya.

The open singles attracted 57 entrants with overseas players from Barbados and Guyana.

The number-one ranked Wilson of Carenage Blasters came from a game down to defeat Barbadian Trevor Farley representing Legends 3-1 (5:11, 11:5, 11:7, 11:3) to claim the $4,000 cash prize.

In the semi-final, Wilson won comfortably against national teammate Yuvraaj Dookram (QPCC) 3-0 (11:6, 11:3, 11:7). In the other semis, former Caribbean singles champion Farley defeated Luc O' Young (Blasters) 3-0 (11:5, 12:10, 11:4).

At press time, the teams' category was at the semi-final stage with Carenage Blasters doing battle against Legends whilst QPCC faced Powergen. Blasters and QPCC were both on track to meet in the final as they played the group stage unbeaten. Blasters won 3-0 against JESWIN, WASA (3-1) and Guaracara Table Tennis Club (3-0). QPCC defeated Legends (3-2), Powergen (3-0), Crusaders (3-0).
