THE EDITOR: I cannot understand the need for police officers on horseback in the city. Yes, the unit can be and has been useful in areas like Maracas Bay. But to see a pair of Mounted Branch officers ambling through the streets of St James in the middle of the day seems not only out of place, but incomprehensible.

What if a crime is committed and the perpetrator is seen running down Western Main Road, are the officers going to gallop the horses down the busy street after the culprit like Crocodile Dundee in New York City? That only happens in movies. Added to which the horses sometimes leave a trail of dung on the street.

Deploy the officers on foot or bicycle to patrol the city and leave the horses for Independence Day parades, please.
