Check all rejected ballots

THE EDITOR: I am surprised that no one is paying attention to the 995 spoilt ballots from the local government elections (LGE).

This is after the nation learnt of the unsigned ballot from Lengua/Indian Walk deemed spoilt by the EBC. The people have not seen it, but it can be adduced that if it was not initialled through an omission. That does not mean the vote was not correctly cast. This raises suspicion as to the "training" of EBC field officials.

I acknowledge that the matter will be going to court for a determination, and all the way to the Privy Council as we do not subscribe to the EBC's vacuous assertions. What if in there are other ballots which can make a difference?

Further, it signalled a referendum in the voting no matter how you look at it. No one voted for local government reform as you don't need an election victory for this. The people cannot take that to the grocery or the bank or pave roads with it.

Whatever it is, there must be transparency. In the absence of election observers, there must be no doubt in the minds of the people.
