Trinidad and Tobago swimmers cop 7 CCAN medals

TT COPPED seven medals at the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Federation Swimming Championships (CCCAN) in El Salvador, on Tuesday.

Liam Carrington won two medals in the boys 13-14 age group – gold in the 200-metre individual medley and bronze in the 200m freestyle. He stopped the clock in two minutes, 10.92 (2:10.92) seconds to win gold in the individual medley. Mexican Jairo Hector Zamora Monzon took silver in 2:11.90 and his countryman Fernando Rodriguez Cuevas earned bronze in 2:15.37.

In the 200m freestyle, Carrington was third in 2:00.56 with Mexicans Franco Santiago Soria Marquez (1:58.56) and Jose Antonio Roman Cruz (1:59.25) grabbing gold and silver respectively.

Copping silver medals for TT were Darren Belfon in the boys 13-14 50m butterfly in 26.33 seconds and Aqeel Joseph in the boys 18 and over 50m butterfly event in 25.08. Other than Carrington, three other TT swimmers bagged bronze medals including Amari Ash (girls 15-17 50m butterfly), Breanna Belmar (girls 11-12 100m breaststroke) and Tyla Ho A Shu (girls 15-17 100m breaststroke).

The performance on Tuesday by the TT swimmers comes just days after two TT junior swimmers delivered quality performances at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, held in TT from August 4-11. Nikoli Blackman and Zarek Wilson won three medals each at the National Aquatic Centre in Couva.

CCCAN will end on August 25.
