Trinidad and Tobago lacks basic human values

THE EDITOR: Despite our abundant natural and human resources, Trinidad is no longer the paradise it once was. We still have rampant poverty, out-of-control crime, lack of civility, me-first attitude, rampant selfishness, broken marriages, drug addiction...and the list continues.

What has brought us to this sorry state? In my opinion, a poverty of values. We are lacking in basic human values.

What makes us human beings, what separates us from animals are the basic values of peace, love, truth, right action and non-violence. Are these truly visible in our society today?

Would increased wealth and a higher standard of living bring us peace? Would more education contribute to a better TT? It would only do so if our education system becomes value-based.

The end of education is character.

We need to learn to live in harmony with ourselves and nature along with learning to make a living.

We need to do a self-audit and focus on the younger generation. We need character-building education.
