The Ministry of Health's Chemistry, Food and Drug Division carried out 272 inspections of pharmacies – including chain pharmacies – across Trinidad and Tobago from 2019-2022.

In a release, it said this is to ensure the sale of drugs are safe, within the standard quality for use and in accordance with the Food and Drugs Act.

The ministry reminded pharmacists that inspectors can examine and seize drugs found to be in violation of the act, which has happened before. These inspections are to ensure unregistered, expired or illegal drugs are not sold, and based on findings and breaches, inspectors can advise or issue warnings to pharmacies.

The Health Ministry reminded pharmacists not to sell or distribute unregistered drugs, as these drugs have not been evaluated to determine their safety and compliance with the act, and can cause harm to the consumer.

Pharmacists were also reminded that expired drugs can decompose and cause serious threats to consumers' health.

The ministry added that it will continue to monitor all pharmacies for the public's safety.
