For the second consecutive day, on Friday a few residents of Rio Claro staged a fiery protest to highlight the bad state of the road, and the MP for the area has called on the Works and Transport Minister to fix the problem immediately.

On Friday, a statement from MP Rushton Paray said St Emilia Street, next to the Rio Claro Cemetery, has numerous landslips, endangering a few homes.

“This issue has persisted for some time and is emblematic of a wider problem. The Mayaro Rio Claro Regional Corporation has made numerous visits with their engineering teams to investigate,” the Opposition MP said.

“Tragically, the Mayaro constituency is plagued by over 100 landslips and dozens of homes have suffered due to land movements. Despite continuous communication from my office to state agencies for direct intervention, our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.”

Fire officer extinguished the burning debris during the protest at Rio Claro on Friday.

Paray said the funding to repair the road is not available at the corporation.

“As MP for Mayaro, I continue to call on the minister to take urgent and immediate action to address these and other landslips in the constituency,” Paray said.

“I wish to assure the residents of the constituency that we are actively lobbying with the agencies of the state at this time regarding all infrastructure issues. My office will continue to work diligently and keep the public informed on all developments.”
