Where is the outrage?

THE EDITOR: I was among many people who were happy to hear that a would-be home invader was shot dead by a woman defending her daughter. I was even more shocked to learn that she might be facing criminal charges for what seems obvious self-defence.

It is true that I don’t have all the facts. But many times basic common sense precludes the need for all the facts. Police always have all the facts yet they are rarely able to do anything with them. The powers-that-be had all the facts in the Naipaul-Coolman case yet botched it beyond degree.

Here are some facts. Home invasions are on the increase. Elderly people are being brutally beaten. Women are being raped in front of their families. Most of these things are not being reported, but the public knows.

Further, with the economic downturn, this is expected to get worse unless something is done about it. But PM Rowley seems to be standing by his supporters, when he should be offering support to the true victims of home invasions.

We have very little protection from the police. Security guards are trying to break into houses. We have a record low rate of solving crime and catching criminals. Yet law-abiding citizens are at risk of facing charges when they try to defend themselves. Where is the public outrage? Why is there no protest over this?

I urge the DPP to do the right thing. And I urge the public to do the right thing if the DPP doesn’t.
