Tough day for Trinidad and Tobago athletes in Tobago

The Trinidad and Tobago teams suffered heavy defeats in rugby and beach volleyball at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Tobago on Sunday.

At Shaw Park Recreation Grounds, TT men were severely beaten 51-0 by Fiji in a Group A match in the Rugby 7 tournament. Fiji players Iliesa Ratubalavu, Nawai Aisea and Tuigaloa Nasoni scored two ties apiece to set an emphatic victory and silence the home crowd.

Later in the afternoon in another group match, the twin-island republic was blown away 59-0 by South Africa. The main scorers for the African were Siyanda Nkosi with four tries and Thandolwami Ntshangase bagged two tries.

Unfortunately, the TT women also were beaten by large margins in their respective matches. Australia blazed the host 71-0 in the 14 minutes of action. Piper Simons led the way with three tries followed by Lucinda Bourke who added two. In their next match, Fiji humbled TT 54-0. Makelesi Tuivuya and VirisitaKauniloloma scored two tries for the visitors.

In beach volleyball at the Black Rock Facility, TT men's pair of Jahreef Miguel and Jerome Morrisson went under 2-0 (21:14, 21:6) to Cyprus pair of Alexis Savvidis/Anninos Chrysosotomou in a Group A match. On Saturday, the TT pair defeated Sri Lankans Manuja Hawarige/Oliver Warnakulasuriya 2-0 (21:15, 21:14).

In the women`s event, TT's L`fe Roberts and Meeka Johnson lost to Kenyans Sharon Arusei/Abigael Chesebe 2-0 (21:14, 21:14). The hosts were also beaten by Bermudans Kayley Hamilton and Natalie Gazzard 2-0 (21:13, 21:9).

The men`s triathlon at the Buccoo Beach Facility was won by Jersey's Luke Holmes in an impressive time of 29 minutes and 47 seconds. Scotsman Alex Robin placed second in 30:03 and third was Jack Latham (Australia) stopping the clock at 30:38. TT`s Liam D`Abadie was 18th in 33:33 mins and James Castagne- Haye was 25th in 42:28 minutes.

Aspen Anderson won the women's category in 32 minutes and 53 seconds. The silver medal was copped by Jessica Heeps (Scotland) in 33:17 and the bronze medal was secured by Maja Brinkmann (Namibia) 34:02.
