Back-to-school shoppers and market vendors were sent scampering when a gunman shot and killed Valmiki Narine just after 10.50 am on Saturday.

Narine, also known as Doole, of Pasea Road Extension, Tunapuna was shot in the upper body and died on the scene.

An eyewitness told Newsday that Narine went to play a mark at a Play Whe booth, on the corner of St Vincent Street and the Eastern Main Road opposite the Tunapuna Market.

As he was leaving, a man got out of a car and shot him, returned to the car and escaped.

Police arrived five minutes later and cornered off the area. Up to noon investigations were still processing the scene.

The eyewitness described the incident as traumatic for everyone, including the children who witnessed it. “It’s scary. It’s hard because it’s making difficult for honest people to make a living and do day-to-day activities. There are elderly people coming in and out of the market. When the shooting happened it left myself including everyone who witnessed it in disarray.”
