Point Fortin New Jets’ Devin Augustine conquered an experienced field of sprinters to capture the national men’s 100m title on day one of the NGC/National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) Open Championships at Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, on Saturday.

Augustine sounded early intent in the prelims by clocking the second fastest (10.39s) qualifying time, and bettered his efforts in the final, by blasting to victory in 10.26s.

He staved off Abilene Wildcats’ Jerod Elcock, who finished in a close silver medal position, in 10.27s. Elcock was the fastest qualifier (10.35s) earlier on.

Holding on to third in the speedy final was Concorde’s Revell Webster (10.36s) while his club-mate Omari Lewis (10.37s) and Abilene’s Judah Taylor (10.41s), rounded off the top five finishers respectively.

The top four finishers dipped below the Pan American qualifying time of 10.40s.

Unattached national women’s 100m record holder Michelle Lee Ahye made up for her absence from last year’s event by powering to victory in 11.31s.

Abilene’s Reyare Thomas took silver in 11.43s while Concorde’s Akilah Lewis bagged bronze in 11.52s.

The top three also bettered and/or equalled the Pan American standard of 11.52s.

In the feature event - 400m men’s final - Abilene Wildcats snagged the 1-2 finish with Asa Guevara (46.52s) and Shakeem McKay (46.65s) leading the pack. Zenith Athletic’s Renny Quow was third in 46.78s.

The women’s equivalent saw Guyana’s Andrea Foster top the field in 55.08s. She was followed by Phoenix Athletics’ Camille Lewis (56.63s) and IG Fastlane’s Jenna Thomas (57.25s), silver and bronze respectively.

The men’s javelin saw favourite and two-time Olympian Keshorn Walcott easily retain his crown with a 80.41m distance. He threw 79.93m on his first, 79.76m on his second and achieved his event winning throw on the third attempt.

Point Fortin New Jets’ Dorian Charles was his best rival in second place, with a throw of 63.54m. his club-mate Anthony Diaz (63.37m) was third while Tobago Falcons’ Le Bron James (57.95m) rounded off the top four.
