MALDIVES will no longer participate in the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games owing to "financial constraints."

The country's Olympic Committee announced this in a Facebook post on Monday evening, calling it "regretful."

Over 1,000 athletes from over 70 countries will travel to TT for the games which will be held from August 4-11.

The post said the country would no longer be participating "due to financial constraints faced by the government and (Olympic Committee).

"Instead, they will focus on preparing for the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games to uphold the nation's sporting excellence."

It said the decision "reflects the commitment to regional competitions and developing young talents within the country.

"(The committee) remains determined to support and nurture local talent for future sporting events."
