Criminals broke into the Church of the Assumption in Maraval during the early morning hours on Tuesday and also tried to break into the nearby parish office.

Parish priest Fr Ashton Pierre, according to a release sent out by the Catholic News, confirmed  he was physically unharmed and no sacramental items were taken or damaged by the intruders.

The release said Pierre was awakened by the sound of breaking glass around 4 am and immediately contacted the St Clair police. He found the front windows of the parish office were shattered and the intruders had tried to pry open its burglar-proofing.

A police investigation is ongoing and police sources said no one has been arrested.

Police officials said the incident served as a reminder for communities and religious institutions to remain vigilant in ensuring the safety and security of their premises.

When attempts were made to get more information on the incident, parish officials referred Newsday to the Catholic News release and said they had nothing further to say.
