Paria danger for drivers

THE EDITOR: The Paria Main Road from Grand Riviere to Matelot poses a danger to drivers, particularly at nights, because of the numerous depressions created by coastal erosion, sea-level rise and heavy rainfall.

The affected areas pose worrisome challenges for the engineers of the Ministry of Works and Transport as they are yet to devise a plan to prevent further structural damage and to protect the roadway.

And there are no signs to warn motorists of the danger ahead, so getting to and from Matelot is risky.

Several years ago a PTSC bus ran off the road because the driver was unaware of the collapsed road. Fortunately no passengers were seriously hurt. If remedial works are not undertaken soon there is certain to be other accidents.

A wise man once said, "In the allocation of resources rural areas should be given precedence as they provide sustenance."

I am calling on the ministry to please save Matelot from the perils of coastal erosions and sea-level rise.

Another concern are those wooden bridges which need to be replaced with concrete structures.
