UNC: Jack Warner responded to Kamla's call for smaller parties to unite

THE UNC says its former chairman Jack Warner became involved in its campaign for the August 14 local government election before the date was even announced.

This was revealed by St Augustine MP Khadijah Ameen at a press conference in Port of Spain on Sunday morning.

Over the weekend, it was confirmed that Warner, a former FIFA vice president and cabinet minister in the UNC-led People's Partnership (PP) coalition government will be returning to active politics.

He promised to explain his return on Monday night as he joins Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and National Transformation Alliance (NTA) leader Gary Griffith on stage at a political meeting at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya.

In June, Persad-Bissessar made an open call to interested and/or smaller political parties to join the UNC to defeat the PNM on August 14.

Asked by the media for more details on Warner's return, Ameen said Warner became involved when the UNC made that call.

"A number (of smaller parties) responded and several came forward to support," she said.

In 2013, after a political fallout with Persad-Bissessar, Warner left the UNC and formed his own party – the Independent Liberal Party (ILP).

Ameen said the joined political forces have been well-received by supporters thus far and urged the public that unity is needed to trump the PNM.

Newsday tried to contact Warner for a comment but all calls went unanswered.
