What is littering?

Littering is dropping your candy or lollipop or chewing gum wrapper on the ground as you walk along. It is throwing your snow cone cup, empty juice box or soft drink bottle, plastic water bottle or snack food wrapper, through the window of your car or the school bus, as you drive or walk along the road. It means leaving your fast food box or your empty food container on the road, or wherever you were, when you finished eating. Littering is putting out your garbage without wrapping it first. It means leaving paper plates and cups lying on the beach or wherever you had your picnic. It even means leaving your clothes lying around your room, for someone else to put away.

Do you litter?

Littering is the first sign of a person who does not care about keeping their home, village, city and country, clean and beautiful. Can you imagine what would happen if every one dropped wrappers, bottles, paper plates and cups wherever they went? Well, thank goodness some people know where to put litter. Litter belongs in a bin. If you cannot find a bin, keep your wrapper or snow cone cup until you get home. Then put it in a bin. There are still some people who throw their garbage bags out of their cars on to the road as they drive home from the beach or an outing. Do not be one of those.

Put your litter in a bin. Put the bin or garbage bag at the side of the road in front of your home and the garbage trucks will do the rest. It is important to put the bin or bag out, just before the garbage truck is due to arrive. This way the street always looks tidy and there is no chance of the bin being upturned, or the garbage bag being ripped up by stray dogs or cats. There is nothing more ugly than heaps of exposed rubbish.

Put glass bottles into a separate bin or box, so they can be collected by people, who sell bottles for recycling. You can now leave plastic bottles and other plastic items at gas stations and other collection points for recycling. Don’t be a litterbug.
