Gabriella Prince, Josiah Hills win Catch Under-14 tennis titles

GABRIELLA Prince and Josiah Hills won Under-14 singles titles at the Catch Tennis Junior Championships 2023 at the National Racquet Centre, Tacarigua on Thursday.

Prince claimed the girls crown with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Madison Khan and in the boys equivalent Hills was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Nirav Dougdeen.

In the boys Under-10 singles final, top-seeded Ryan Steuart was one of the most dominant players on the day getting past second-seeded Djalminha Lewis 4-0, 4-0.

In the boys Under-12 singles final, second-ranked Jack Brown won the title after defeating Oliver Harragin 6-4, 7-6 and Abba Campbell-Smith proved she deserved her number one ranking by winning the girls Under-12 singles title with a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 win over second-seeded Makeda Bain.

Abba followed in the footsteps of her younger sister Rukha who sealed the girls Under-10 title on Wednesday which was played in a round robin format.

In the junior girls doubles semi-finals, the top two teams both had to fight from a set down to advance to the finals.

Third-seeded pair Lilly Mohammed and Naomi Mohammed won the first set 7-5 against first-seeded pair Khan and Prince. Khan and Prince showed their quality in the second set with a 6-2 victory, before sealing a place in the final with a 10-8 win in the third set.

Second-seeded Abba Campbell-Smith and her sister Em-Miryam showed resilience to win their semi-final against fourth-ranked Makeda Bain and Shiloh Walker 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.

Doubles finals results were unavailable up to press time on Thursday.
