One of the primary schoolchildren injured in Monday’s crash on their way to school has been kept overnight in hospital for observation.

The police did not give the child’s name or age. He or she is at the San Fernando General Hospital.

They said everyone else was examined and given the all-clear to go home.

The crash happened around 8 am on the Southern Main Road in Savonetta, Couva.

The police said the driver and about ten students were taken for treatment at the Couva district health facility.

Monday marked the first day of the school year.

The police said the driver was heading in a private bus to Couva, a short distance from Pranz Gardens, taking the students to schools in the California/Couva area.

Investigators believe the driver lost control and the bus veered off the wet road, flipped and landed upside down in an overgrown area.

Drivers stopped and helped the children out of the bus.

Officers from Mon Repos, Savonetta and Couva fire stations responded.

A Facebook post at 2.49 pm on Monday from the Ministry of Education offered "best wishes and a speedy recovery to the driver and ten students involved in the accident in Savonetta this morning."

Point-a-Pierre MP David Lee also took to social media to offer his prayers and best wishes for recovery to the students and driver.

"Very unfortunate news to begin the new school term with, but let us keep these children as well as their families in our prayers as we pray for all children who have begun the new school term today," he posted on Facebook.

Couva police are investigating.
