Running on the outskirts

THE EDITOR: Physical inactivity is estimated to contribute to 1.9 million deaths per year globally (World Health Organization, 2002).

During the lockdown it was evident that physical activity decreased among the people of this country. In addition, significant pressure was placed on the healthcare system due to covid19. Therefore, it would benefit the country greatly if citizens were to become health conscious.

For some, this has always been the case. Up until recently the Ato Boldon Stadium was a safe, free, recreational ground. It was used for large events but also for people to exercise freely. Additionally, one could say it was one of the most used recreational sites in Trinidad. Unfortunately, residents of Couva and environs are no longer able to use the facility unless a fee was paid.

To overcome this obstacle, some people began exercising outside its gates, which is not only unsafe due to vehicular traffic but also unnecessary. To make matters worse, many people no longer visit at all. So, do they still participate in physical activity or have they given it up altogether?

This may seem insignificant, but if this issue is addressed it can go a long way in improving the nation’s health.

The stadium should be accessible to all. If available, why must people have to run on the outskirts?
