Akil Campbell strikes gold in elimination race at Nations Cup

TRINIDAD and Tobago men’s endurance cyclist Akil Campbell won gold in the men’s elimination race at the 2022 Tissot International Cycling Union Track Nations Cup in Cali, Colombia, on Friday night.

Finishing behind Campbell was Italian Michele Scartezzini and Colombian Jordan Arley Parra Arias.

Barbadian Edwin Sutherland finished fourth and Chinese Yu Ze rounded off the top five.

The TT pair of Nicholas Paul and Kwesi Browne competed in the men’s keirin, on Saturday.

In round one, Paul won heat five in 9.774 seconds to advance to round two.

Browne was second in heat three and did not progress as only the winner of each heat advanced automatically. Colombian Kevin Quintero won the heat in 10.040.

Browne had a second chance to qualify for the second round in the round one repechage. He finished second in heat three and did not advance. After press time on Saturday, Paul competed in the second round of the men’s keirin for a place in the final later in the night.
