TRINIDAD and Tobago’s women’s football had a rough start to their Concacaf W Championship campaign as they suffered a 6-0 mauling against Canada on Tuesday night.

At the Estadio BBVA Bancomer in Mexico, the Women Warriors were outplayed by the Olympic champions.

After striking the TT goal post in the 16th minute, Canadian captain Christine Sinclair sent them ahead in the 27th minute with a free header just outside the six-yard box.

Two minutes later, TT skipper Karyn Forbes gave away a penalty and but Canadian striker Jessie Fleming shot high and missed her chance to send them 2-0 up.

Into the second period, substitute Julia Grosso scored back-to-back goals in the 67th and 79th minutes.

Three more goals came in quick succession as Canada’s Fleming (84’) made up for her first-half miss, while Janine Beckie (87th) and Jordyn Huitema (90+1’) also found the back of TT’s net.

In the other Group B match, Costa Rica beat Panama 3-0.

TT’s next game kicks off on Friday against Costa Rica and then Panama on Monday. Both matches begin at 7pm.

To affirm 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification, TT must finish in either first or second in Group B.
