Kamla: UNC ready for new alliances

YEARS after the contentious withdrawal of labour from the People’s Partnership government and Fyzabad Accord, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is hoping join forces with the movement to remove the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) from power.

Last Friday, Persad-Bissessar received a copy of the motion of no-confidence moved and passed against the Prime Minister and his administration on a Labour Day platform in Fyzabad.

On Sunday, Persad-Bissessar said, “All things are possible, in the fullness of time.”

She said her United National Congress (UNC) was prepared to work with anyone “to remove this wicked, corrupt Rowley regime.

“The unions have asked for our help and we will ask for their help.”

She acknowledge the party's membership was skeptical about a possible alliance with the labour movement given the past.

However, she said, “I say simply, mistakes can be made, have been made by many people. We have to let bygones be bygones because we have a greater battle to fight.

"That battle is to fight to remove this wicked government out of office.”

“All is forgiven. Nothing is every forgotten. I don’t have lapses like Mr Armour,” she said in reference to Attorney General Reginald Armour's explanation for what led to him being disqualified by the judge hearing the Piarco airport corruption case in a Miami court.

She also said the UNC had not entered into any arrangement or negotiation with the Gary Griffith-led National Transformation Alliance (NTA).

The UNC leader was also critical of the acting Police Commissioner McDonald Jacob's performance. She said the country has decend into a state of chaos, darkness, crime, murder and mayhem.

Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal said Jacob was "walking a fine line" by attacking the Opposition.

He advised Jacob to leave politics to the politicians. Persad-Bissessar was non-committal on the Opposition's support on the Bail Act when it returns to Parliament, saying she will first have to see if there are any proposed changes to the law.

She said so far, the current law has not helped.

“Crime continues to escalate. It has gotten worse.”
